Not so Perfect Strangers

The novel opens with a flash-forward: Tasha Jenkins stands outside a burning house at 818 Wicker Street in Southeast Washington, D.C. She calls 9-1-1, then confesses to a firefighter that she started the fire. Two people have been shot inside. The narrative shifts back in time to reveal how Tasha, a Black woman trapped in an abusive marriage, and Madison Gingell, a wealthy white woman married to a powerful D.C. lobbyist, crossed paths and became entangled in a deadly scheme.

Madison attends a cocktail party thrown by her husband Phil Gingell's lobbying firm, Wyatt & Harris, where she spots Phil with Penelope, a young redheaded intern whose possessive body language confirms Madison's suspicion of an affair. After the party, Madison accuses Phil of cheating in the elevator; he dismisses her. In the hotel lobby, Madison refuses to get into their car and instead runs to a blue sedan idling nearby, banging on the window and begging the driver to let her in. The driver is Tasha.

Tasha has been at the hotel with her 17-year-old son, Ghalen, preparing to flee to Atlanta and escape her husband, Kordell Jenkins, who recently escalated to physical violence. Ghalen has left a note saying he cannot go, and Tasha is driving home to retrieve him. When she sees Madison at the car window with a man pursuing her, Tasha is reminded of her own situation and unlocks the door. As they drive, Tasha confesses that her husband also abuses her. She drops Madison at what she believes is a friend's house, gives her a business card for her knitting business, Knit 'N' Things, and drives home to Kordell, who shoves her as she enters.

Madison weaponizes Phil's fear of her leaving to restore control over their marriage. She knows secrets about Phil's illegal activities, including bribes to politicians, and uses this leverage. Phil begins a "second honeymoon" phase of attentive behavior, and the affair with Penelope appears to stop. But Madison's anxiety returns when Phil begins working late again, and she spirals into violent fantasies about killing him.

A lengthy flashback reveals Madison's darker past. She grew up with a violently abusive, religiously fanatical father in a small Washington State town. At 13, she was groomed and sexually abused by Reverend Brennan, the family's church pastor. When Brennan abandoned her, dismissing her as "some thirteen-year-old girl," Madison stabbed him to death with her mother's boning knife. The murder was never solved. Years later, Madison arranged the murder of Phil's first wife, Ashley, enlisting her adopted twin brother, William, known as Billy, after Ashley refused to grant Phil a divorce. A homeless man was wrongly convicted of the crime.

Weeks after their first meeting, Madison contacts Tasha through Instagram and invites her to lunch. Tasha, who has had her phone and car keys confiscated by Kordell as punishment, must lie about having a job interview to attend. At the restaurant, the two women bond over their shared situations. Afterward, Madison proposes that they "get rid of" both husbands. Tasha is horrified and runs, acutely aware that a Black woman would never receive the benefit of the doubt a white woman like Madison would.

Madison resolves to be patient. She secretly uses her influence as a major donor to Myers Trust, a nonprofit, to get Tasha hired as an executive assistant. At her new job, Tasha reconnects with Morris Hammond, a man she loved almost two decades earlier. Tasha had once planned to leave Kordell for Morris but was in a serious car accident that caused Ghalen's premature birth. Interpreting the crisis as divine punishment, she stayed with Kordell. Now reunited, Tasha and Morris begin a cautious romance.

Meanwhile, Madison drives to rural Maryland to ask Billy to kill Kordell. Billy, who has a drug addiction, refuses, haunted by his role in Ashley's murder. Undeterred, Madison takes Phil's pistol and lures Kordell to an isolated road near Cumberland, Maryland, posing as a client needing cabinetry work. She stages a flat tire; when Kordell changes it, he spots her reflection in the hubcap holding the gun. He tries to flee, and she shoots him four times in the back.

When Tasha learns Kordell is dead, she suspects Madison but has no proof. At Kordell's funeral, she confides in Morris, who urges caution. Weeks later, Madison appears at a flea market where Tasha sells knitted goods, confirms she killed Kordell, reveals she arranged Tasha's job, and demands Tasha kill Phil in return. Tasha refuses.

Madison escalates her campaign: She gets Tasha fired from Myers Trust through donor pressure and threatens Morris and Ghalen. Tasha takes protective measures, beginning family therapy with Ghalen, installing security cameras, and obtaining a gun from one of Kordell's friends. She also makes two failed attempts to warn Phil directly, but he dismisses her as deranged. Morris, frustrated by Tasha's refusal to let him fully into her life, ends their relationship.

Ghalen, meanwhile, assaults his girlfriend Imani at school, shoving her to the floor. Tasha is horrified to see Kordell's pattern of abuse emerging in her son. She confronts Ghalen and confesses the full truth of her marriage, begging him to break the cycle.

Tasha records a phone call in which Madison admits she killed Kordell and will "eventually" kill Tasha. Ghalen picks up another extension and hears everything. Madison taunts him, giving her address and daring him to come. That night, Ghalen leaves to confront Madison but is pulled over and arrested for speeding before he arrives.

Investigation chapters follow Detectives Simmons and Montrose of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department as they work the Gingell case. Simmons doubts Tasha's confession: She seemed shocked to learn the victims were shot, and she called 9-1-1 herself. He discovers Kordell's recent unsolved murder, connecting both cases to Madison.

A late chapter reveals the night of the murder from Madison's perspective. She had expected Ghalen to break in, planning to wake Phil so he would shoot the intruder. Instead, a masked figure enters, and Phil orders the assassin to shoot Madison. The killer is Billy, whom Phil hired after Billy warned him about Madison's plot. Phil had planned Madison's death to be with Summer Ross, Madison's social acquaintance. Phil ultimately pulls the trigger himself.

Tasha, not knowing Ghalen was arrested, takes a Lyft to 818 Wicker Street, recognizing it as the house where she dropped Madison off months earlier. She enters through an open side door and finds Madison dead on the bedroom floor and Phil alive with a shoulder wound. Believing Ghalen committed the shooting, Tasha strikes Phil unconscious with a heavy metal object, then lights candles around the bedroom to start a fire intended to destroy evidence. She calls 9-1-1 before the flames spread to neighboring homes and confesses to protect her son.

After interviewing Ghalen, who confirms his arrest that night, and hearing Phil's fabricated story that Madison shot him and then killed herself, Detective Simmons releases Tasha. Her charges are dropped. Five months later, Phil meets Billy for a final payment; both realize neither of them set the fire, though the reader already knows Tasha started it. Tasha resolves to carry this secret forever.

In the final scene, Tasha helps Ghalen load a U-Haul for his freshman year at Bowie State University. She has sold their house and plans to drive around the country before settling somewhere new. Morris has called and said he will wait for her. As she pulls away, she watches Ghalen's image shrink in the rearview mirror before she rounds the corner.
