Through candid conversation with Slim, the most respected man on the ranch, George reveals the deep loyalty and daily burden that define his bond with Lennie. The death of Candy's dog, foreshadowed by Carlson's blunt suggestion, and the brief surge of hope sparked by Candy's savings illuminate both the cruelty and tenderness that run through life on the ranch. When Curley's wife is found dead, the machinery of vengeance moves fast, sidelining Candy and forcing George into the hunting party closing in on his own friend. The story ends with Slim offering the only real comfort available, as the men who lack empathy look on without the slightest understanding of what has been lost.

The mercy killing of Candy's dog marks a tonal shift in the novella, while Candy's savings briefly transform the farm from fantasy to real possibility before Curley's wife's death shatters it. Crooks's moment of hope — and its swift removal by a racist threat — illustrates how quickly the powerless are forced back into their place. When Lennie kills Curley's wife, the responses of those around him reveal their true priorities: Lennie mourns his rabbits, Curley wants blood, and George faces the hardest choice of his life. The story closes on a note of cold incomprehension as the men who lack empathy stare after those who carry grief they will never understand.
