Snyder closes with reflections on his own children, arguing freedom is not automatic but a fragile chance that must be seized together.

Snyder opens in war-torn Ukraine, where he argues that true freedom requires building meaningful structures, not merely removing oppression. In the Introduction, he traces his personal intellectual journey from Cold War anxieties to his 1990 Moscow visit to Russia's 2022 invasion, arriving at the conviction that freedom demands active human courage, as Zelensky demonstrates by remaining in Kyiv. In Chapter 1, he grounds sovereignty in Edith Stein's philosophy of the lived body, showing how Nazi dehumanization and his own near-fatal illness both illuminate what is at stake when human subjecthood is denied or stripped away. Chapter 2 introduces unpredictability through Havel's argument that tyranny demands conformity, while Chapter 3 traces how Freedom Riders fought for mobility against violent segregation enforced by state and vigilante violence alike. Chapter 4 shows how the big lie about the 2020 election and the January 6 Capitol attack illustrate how disinformation destroys democratic institutions from within. The book closes with calls for solidarity through voting, a proposal to protect minds from algorithmic manipulation, and a reminder that freedom is a fragile but renewable chance that must be seized together.

The headline arc of freedom as an active, collective practice.

Snyder outlines the five forms of freedom — sovereignty, unpredictability, mobility, factuality, and solidarity — as the book's core organizing framework.

The Polish Solidarity movement builds horizontal networks of social trust through voluntary associations, helping facilitate Poland's eventual democratic transition away from authoritarianism.

Snyder critiques the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision for equating money with speech and advancing oligarchic power at democracy's expense.

Snyder calls for subsidized local journalism, national documentation infrastructure, and taxes on targeted advertising to sustain factuality and defend democracy against disinformation.

Snyder frames his book from the start with five forms of freedom and grounds his inquiry in his grandmother's early insistence that he remember the Holocaust, establishing historical memory as a lifelong moral anchor. The 1989 revolutions draw him toward history, and he finds vivid examples of embodied cultural memory in children playing klezmer at a desecrated Polish synagogue and in his in-person collaboration with the dying historian Tony Judt. Chapter 2 reveals how Eastern European dissidents, from Havel's Charter 77 to the martyred philosopher Patočka, resisted conformity, and how social media now deploys the same predictability-manufacturing techniques as communist-era television. Chapter 3 moves through the concrete history of mobility's denial, from Isaac Woodard's blinding to Snyder's concept of sadopopulism, showing how immobility is enforced through both direct violence and cynical political spectacle. Chapter 4 examines how Stalinist doublethink and contemporary disinformation both strip citizens of independent judgment, while Chapter 5 celebrates Poland's Solidarity movement as proof that horizontal civic trust can overcome authoritarianism and sustain democratic transition. The conclusion calls for defending democracy through campaign finance reform and an urgent reinvestment in the local journalism that makes a shared factual world possible.

The secondary examples and encounters that build Snyder's case for freedom.

Snyder draws on Simone Weil's argument that recognizing the stranger expands self-knowledge, anchoring his vision of sovereignty as irreducibly relational and social.

Snyder observes that Jim Crow segregation in his Ohio childhood was presented as natural rather than the result of deliberate, policy-driven exclusion.

Irene Morgan wins a Supreme Court ruling outlawing segregation in interstate travel, but the landmark decision produces little immediate change in practice.

Leon Bass, a Black serviceman, helps liberate the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald, then returns home to face Jim Crow segregation in America.

Snyder introduces three time warps — inevitability, eternity, and catastrophe — as political distortions that immobilize societies by collapsing the range of possible futures.

Fossil fuel interests spread scientific falsehoods about climate change to protect profits, creating what Snyder calls an extinction spiral of denial, delay, and scapegoating.

Snyder critiques libertarianism as an ideology of submission to an imaginary free market that blocks solidarity, mobility, and factuality while entrenching oligarchic power.

Snyder distinguishes totalitarianism, which imposes one truth, from notalitarianism, which erases all truth, arguing both dissolve the civic space where freedom operates.

Snyder calls mass incarceration a contradiction of American ideals and argues for fewer prisons, shorter sentences, and prehabilitative investment to create real pathways to freedom.

Snyder's third pool centers on the revelations that progressively reframe how freedom is understood, beginning with his critique of the post-Cold War assumption that markets automatically guarantee democracy and his reinterpretation of the Liberty Bell as a symbol of incompleteness rather than achievement. In Chapter 1, he draws on Simone Weil to argue that recognizing the stranger is itself a form of freedom, and he shows how Jim Crow segregation's false naturalness and the courage of wounded Ukrainian soldiers both illustrate how unfreedom is enforced and how freedom is collectively rebuilt. Chapter 2 delivers two pivotal turning points: Havel's secret mountaintop meeting with Polish dissidents that produced his landmark essay on tyranny and conformity, and the improbable cultural chain from American blues through the Czech underground to the Velvet Revolution, showing how freedom travels through accident and solidarity. Chapter 3 exposes the mechanics of immobility, from the gap between Irene Morgan's legal victory and real-world change, to Leon Bass's return from Buchenwald into Jim Crow, to the three time warps that freeze societies in denial and nostalgia. Chapter 4 reveals how fossil fuel disinformation creates an extinction spiral, and Chapter 5 delivers two conceptual revelations distinguishing totalitarianism from notalitarianism and unmasking libertarianism as a trap disguised as freedom. The conclusion closes with Snyder's sharpest structural challenge, calling out mass incarceration as the defining contradiction of American claims to freedom.

The key discoveries and conceptual shifts that progressively reframe freedom's meaning.
