Nietzsche recalls questioning the meaning of 'good' and 'evil' as a young child, suspecting that morality itself could cause harm.

Nietzsche reads Dr. Paul Rée's work on moral sentiments and publishes Human, All Too Human as a critical philosophical response.

Nietzsche criticizes Western 'psychologists' for adhering to utilitarian morality, arguing it ignores the role of social power in shaping values.

Nietzsche examines the word 'nobility' to demonstrate that moral goodness has always been tied to wealth and aristocratic status.

Nietzsche traces how 'clean' and 'unclean' transformed from physical sanitation terms into markers of moral good and bad.

Nietzsche argues that oppressed peoples developed 'slave morality' as a deliberate inversion of aristocratic values.

Nietzsche introduces 'resentment' as the creative emotional force that produces an entirely new moral system among the oppressed.

Nietzsche argues that the human ability to make promises gave rise to responsibility, obligation, and ultimately guilt.

Nietzsche establishes that guilt originated from an ancient creditor/debtor relationship that demanded compensation for wrongs committed.

Nietzsche distinguishes the life-affirming 'good conscience' of the sovereign individual from the guilt-driven 'bad conscience' of the masses.

Nietzsche argues that punishment's greatest outcome is the improvement of memory, fundamentally reshaping how humans govern their own behavior.

Nietzsche introduces the sovereign individual as one who makes personal promises entirely independent of any inherited cultural moral system.

Nietzsche criticizes Wagner's opera Parsifal as proof that even great artists can surrender entirely to Christian ascetic ideals.

Nietzsche argues that the ascetic priest gains authority by living among the sick and using their shared suffering as a source of power.

Nietzsche warns that as society abandons religion, ascetic ideals do not disappear but instead migrate into and pervade scientific thinking.

Nietzsche begins by tracing his lifelong skepticism about good and evil, from childhood questioning to published philosophical debate with his contemporaries. In the first essay, he dismantles Western utilitarian morality by exposing how language like 'nobility' reveals that goodness was always tied to wealth and power rather than altruism. He introduces 'slave morality' as the oppressed class's creative inversion of aristocratic values, driven by resentment rather than genuine virtue. Moving into the second essay, Nietzsche traces how the human capacity for making promises created responsibility, guilt, and the creditor/debtor dynamic that underpins all moral systems. He draws a sharp contrast between the sovereign individual's affirming 'good conscience' and the guilt-ridden 'bad conscience' that governs most people. The third essay condemns ascetic ideals — visible in Wagner's opera and the ascetic priest's manipulation of suffering — and warns that these life-denying values survive the death of religion by migrating into science.

The core philosophical argument of On the Genealogy of Morals.

Nietzsche recounts attributing all evil to God as a teenager, later recognizing this as an unexamined a priori philosophical assumption.

Nietzsche draws a distinction between the theological beliefs taught in his childhood and what he calls 'moral prejudice.'

Nietzsche argues that the longer selfless actions were praised, the more permanently they became equated with goodness itself.

Nietzsche explains that powerful groups historically constructed self-designating names like 'the true' to elevate their own moral status.

Nietzsche argues that race was used throughout history to reinforce the social divide between the morally 'good' and the morally 'bad.'

Nietzsche points to the Jewish faith as the earliest historical example of an organized slaves' revolt against aristocratic morality.

Nietzsche explains that many oppressed people come to view their own submissiveness as a voluntary and deeply righteous choice.

Nietzsche argues that forgetfulness is a positive and necessary feature of the human condition, enabling joy and psychological rest.

Nietzsche explains that ancient societies used physical pain in public ceremonies to embed moral values permanently into human memory.

Nietzsche reveals that cruelty and festivity were historically paired, showing that pain and communal joy were once naturally inseparable.

Nietzsche lists over a dozen purposes of punishment, arguing that punishment carries different meanings and functions across different historical contexts.

Nietzsche argues that as a community grows in power, minor individual offenses shrink in importance and punishments become more relaxed.

Nietzsche criticizes Schopenhauer for treating sexuality as an obstacle to intellectual life, identifying this attitude as ascetic self-denial.

Nietzsche argues that suppressing sensuality through asceticism does not destroy desire but forces it to resurface as pride and ambition.

Nietzsche declares that all good things were once considered bad, concluding that no moral value holds any inherent or fixed meaning.

Nietzsche opens the preface by recounting how he moved from childhood theological assumptions to a more rigorous critique of moral prejudice and cultural conditioning. In the first essay, he expands his linguistic analysis to show how language, race, and aristocratic self-naming all contributed to embedding power into moral categories throughout history. He identifies the Jewish tradition as the first historical expression of a slaves' revolt against aristocratic morality, and explores how oppressed people reframe their submission as a virtuous and righteous choice. The second essay reveals how memory, physical pain, and forgetfulness were the ancient mechanisms by which moral values were inscribed into human consciousness through ceremony and punishment. Nietzsche examines the many purposes of punishment and the effect of community size on its application, while also criticizing Schopenhauer's ascetic treatment of sensuality as a philosophical obstacle. He ultimately concludes that no moral value holds inherent meaning, since all things considered good were once considered bad — a foundational principle of his entire genealogical method.

Supporting arguments and key concepts across Nietzsche's three essays.

Nietzsche reveals that genuinely questioning morality produces profound doubt, causing belief in every moral system to begin to collapse.

Nietzsche reveals that 'good' was never rooted in altruism but was always a self-designation invented by those already holding power.

Nietzsche reveals that the shift from knightly aristocratic values to priestly aristocratic values transformed how goodness and moral power were defined.

Nietzsche argues that the Church is useful mainly because its existence provokes individuals to rebel and create entirely their own values.

Nietzsche reveals that both aristocratic morality and slave morality serve their respective classes, making neither system inherently right or wrong.

Nietzsche reveals that morality's key social function was making human behavior predictable and governable, directly serving those who held power.

Nietzsche reveals that ancient humans invented gods partly to serve as unseen witnesses to unobserved suffering that would otherwise go unacknowledged.

Nietzsche argues that bad conscience is a form of societal imprisonment, turning individuals violently against their own instincts and desires.

Nietzsche reveals that the concept of sin expanded the creditor/debtor dynamic so that humans became indebted to both their community and God.

Nietzsche argues that artists always become servants of a morality, philosophy, or religion rather than remaining true to their own creative instincts.

Nietzsche reveals that the ascetic priest redirects followers' resentment away from the nobility and inward toward their own perceived moral failings.

Nietzsche exposes asceticism as a strategy for distracting people from existential despair by filling their consciousness with routine and self-assessment.

Nietzsche argues that denying one part of the self through asceticism inevitably suppresses every other part of the self as well.

Nietzsche firmly rejects nihilism, insisting that individuals must forge their own purpose from personal will rather than surrender to meaninglessness.

Nietzsche concludes that humans can live freely only by constructing independent personal values, untethered from life-denying Christian asceticism.

Nietzsche begins by revealing that genuinely interrogating morality produces not clarity but profound doubt — an unsettling discovery that motivates the entire work. The first essay exposes the genealogical truth that 'good' was never altruistic but always a designation of power, and that both slave and master morality serve their respective classes without either being objectively correct. A crucial turning point arrives when Nietzsche reveals that morality's deepest social function was making human behavior predictable and governable, which directly served those already in power. In the second essay, Nietzsche uncovers how ancient humans invented gods to account for unobserved suffering, setting the stage for the creditor/debtor relationship to expand into a debt owed to both God and community. The third essay reveals the ascetic priest's psychological strategy of redirecting followers' resentment inward, creating 'sin' and filling lives with routine to mask existential despair. Nietzsche ultimately rejects nihilism and calls for individuals to construct their own life-affirming values, free from the constraints of inherited moral systems.
