Snyder closes by warning that belief in democracy's inevitable triumph has made Americans dangerously complacent in the face of new tyrants.

Snyder opens by invoking the Founding Fathers' fear that America would one day succumb to tyranny, as so many earlier republics had. He traces how ordinary citizens' willingness to comply — demonstrated by history and psychology experiments — enables dictators to seize power over free peoples. Drawing on the Nazi takeover of Germany and other examples, he shows how institutions are dismantled, paramilitaries are built, and truth is destroyed through propaganda. He highlights how standing out, as Churchill did, can reverse the course of seemingly lost struggles. The book then traces Poland's democratic collapse under communism and its eventual recovery through the Solidarity movement. In the closing chapters, Snyder warns that staged emergencies, nationalist thinking, and the false belief in democracy's inevitable survival leave modern Americans dangerously exposed to new forms of tyranny.

Russian operatives take control of a French television station and broadcast a fake video falsely attributed to a terrorist organization.

Snyder warns that the politics of eternity — nostalgia for an imaginary past national greatness — is a defining tool of modern tyrants.

Snyder builds his argument through a wide range of historical and contemporary examples that illuminate how tyranny spreads beneath the surface of everyday life. He explains how economic instability creates fertile ground for authoritarians and how ordinary people's instinctive compliance makes resistance harder over time. He shows how entire professions abandon their ethics in service of a regime, and how ordinary police — not elite death squads — carried out the bulk of the Holocaust's mass killings. He highlights examples of individual courage alongside systemic failures, including citizens falling for foreign disinformation campaigns online. He warns against the erosion of privacy and the concentration of media power, pointing to how influence operations exploit these weaknesses abroad and in the United States. The pool closes with Snyder's warning about eternity politics, in which leaders promise a return to a mythical golden age as a substitute for genuine democratic engagement.

This pool traces the revelatory moments in Snyder's argument — the points where understanding shifts and the stakes of inaction become undeniable. Snyder reveals that the vulnerability of American democracy is real but not hopeless, and that the tools of tyranny are already visible in contemporary politics. He exposes how the Holocaust's true scale depended on ordinary police rather than elite units, how a US presidential candidate deployed private security forces against dissenters, and how modern rhetoric about fake news mirrors Hitler's attacks on the press. He unpacks the psychological and political mechanisms that make citizens complicit in their own subjugation, from performative loyalty displays to willful ignorance of privacy violations. The pool closes by moving from diagnosis to responsibility, with Snyder urging Americans to reject false promises of safety, recognize extremists for what they are, and understand that democracy's survival requires their active and courageous participation.
