A billionaire meets Faye for lunch to discuss a literary magazine but spends the entire meal outlining his own life plans instead.

On the flight to Athens, Faye strikes up a conversation with the silver-haired Greek man sitting beside her.

The neighbor describes his two marriages, painting his first wife fondly and his second as ignorant and cruel.

Faye challenges the neighbor's biased account of his marriages, and he concedes that his second wife had left for her sick mother.

In Athens, Faye is put up in Clelia's immaculate apartment, filled with lifelike artifacts that blur the boundary between illusion and reality.

Ryan, a fellow workshop teacher, tells Faye about moving to the US, transforming himself there, and losing his drive to write literary fiction since.

The neighbor picks Faye up for their second meeting and reveals he has been divorced three times, not the two he mentioned on the plane.

While anchored at sea, Faye watches a young family on a nearby boat and is overcome with painful yearning for what she has lost.

Panitois meets Faye for dinner and shows her a photo he took of her family in happier times, urging her to accept it as part of her truth.

Faye's first writing class begins with an assignment to describe an interesting observation from that morning, sparking a freewheeling debate about what constitutes a story.

Cassandra declares she is deeply disappointed by Faye's teaching, demands a full refund, and tells Faye she is a lousy teacher.

On their third meeting, the neighbor confesses his attraction to Faye and attempts to embrace her; Faye pushes him away and goes for a swim.

Faye tells the neighbor she has no interest in any romantic relationship post-divorce, and they return to shore.

During Faye's final class, a loan officer calls to reject her loan extension request, addressing Faye by her name for the first time in the novel.

On Faye's last morning in Athens, the neighbor calls one final time; she declines, then gently corrects his farewell word from 'solicitude' to 'solitude.'

Faye, a divorced English novelist, travels to Athens to teach a writing workshop after a strange pre-flight lunch with a billionaire who never discusses the literary magazine they were supposed to plan. On the plane she befriends a charming older Greek neighbor whose account of his marriages she quietly challenges, setting the tone for the week ahead. In Athens she teaches a workshop where students debate what a story even is, and one student, Cassandra, departs furiously demanding a refund. Her week is punctuated by the neighbor's escalating pursuit, which ends badly when he attempts to embrace her during a third boat trip and she firmly rejects him. The novel closes on Faye's final morning, when a loan officer denies her extension and the neighbor makes one last call, mispronouncing the word he means.

The core arc of Faye's week in Athens, from departure to final departure.

The billionaire books Faye a cab to the airport, and Faye realizes she cannot remember having told him she was going to Athens.

The neighbor tells Faye that his wealthy Greek family moved to England when he was a child, leaving a brain-injured brother behind on the island in the care of attendants.

The neighbor describes giving up all shared assets to his first wife after their divorce and moving onto his yacht, believing he could rebuild his wealth.

Faye tells the neighbor that she recently moved to London from the family home in the country with her two sons following a painful divorce.

Faye notices a dove sitting in a nest on the terrace of Clelia's apartment, keeping silent vigil day and night before flying off to a nearby rooftop.

Driving to the marina, the neighbor reveals his son Takis has schizophrenia and recently freed all the livestock from a neighbor's farm, believing they were endangered.

The neighbor tells Faye the story of his uncle Theo, who refused to bury his wife Irini and visited her glass casket daily until his own death six months later.

Panitois tells Faye his marriage to Chrysta failed because they treated their relationship as a competition to acquire houses, travels, and children.

Angeliki describes being surrounded by hyper-efficient Berlin mothers managing large families without strain, returning to Athens overwhelmed by the exhaustion they never showed.

Panitois recounts his first solo trip with his children post-divorce, a miserable start that transformed when they stumbled upon a mountain inn full of French girl scouts.

Student Theo tells the class an elaborate story about finding an abandoned handbag with a wallet inside and watching a policeman retrieve it.

Student Clio tells the class that hearing a Bach fugue float from a music college window made her feel as if a piece of music that was hers had been taken away.

Marielle tells the class she understood her husband was cheating when she heard him singing an aria from Carmen in the shower.

Faye's younger son calls during class, lost on his way to school; she steps outside and guides him to the building over the phone.

Ryan briefly meets Faye's friend Elena, is visibly struck by her beauty, then excuses himself to call his son goodnight and go home.

This pool traces the texture of Faye's Athens week through its secondary but significant moments, from the first odd detail that the billionaire somehow already knew she was going to Athens, to the specific stories told by her workshop students. The neighbor's backstory is deepened by the revelations about his disabled brother left on a Greek island and his son Takis's schizophrenia, while Clelia's apartment offers its own quiet commentary through a dove keeping silent vigil on the terrace. At dinner, Panitois and Angeliki each share stories of personal failure and reinvention, with Angeliki describing the suffocating efficiency of Berlin mothers who drove her to impractical shoes. In class, students Theo, Clio, and Marielle each deliver stories that reveal something about selfhood, observation, and betrayal, and Faye's younger son interrupts with a call from a London street where he is lost.

The supporting scenes that flesh out Faye's week — conversations, settings, and student voices.

Faye notes as an aside that the billionaire's wind farm will be located off a stretch of coastline where he incidentally already owns a house.

Faye tells the neighbor that returning to his first wife would only make him feel as confined as he did before, and he agrees this is true.

Ryan describes how the image of a beautiful girl reading on a treadmill became his lifelong symbol for the transformed self he was climbing toward.

Ryan casually reveals that he and his wife have an arrangement permitting each to look at attractive others while on holiday.

Seeing the neighbor in Athens daylight for the first time, Faye notices he appears shorter, older, and covered in gold jewelry she had not registered on the plane.

Swimming away from the neighbor's boat, Faye briefly feels she could dissolve into anonymity but immediately recognizes the desire as an illusion.

Angeliki stops mid-conversation to write down Faye's observation about losing oneself inside a marriage, pulling out a pen and asking her to repeat it slowly.

Angeliki admits she had been an obsessive mother only to manufacture a sense of her own importance, and that six months of illness finally broke the pattern.

Penelope tells the writing class she can no longer tell which stories belong to her, her mind so crowded with absorbed voices and second-hand memories that her own subjectivity has dissolved.

The neighbor reveals to Faye that his first marriage actually ended because his wife woke him from a nap to confront him about his infidelity.

Elena tells Faye and Melete that her strategy with men is always brutal honesty from the start, because their reaction to rejection reveals everything about their character.

Elena tells Faye and Melete that overhearing Konstantin say at a party he did not want more children has created a wedge between them she cannot close.

Melete describes childhood vomiting episodes that began when her stepfather moved in and stopped only when a therapist told her to play the trumpet.

Penelope tells the final class about beating her dog Mimi in a moment of rage after the dog ate a birthday cake; the dog ran away and was never found.

Anne tells Faye that listening to a diplomat describe his life on the flight to Athens helped her define herself in opposition to him, giving her the first outline of a self she has felt since the mugging.

This pool follows the moments where something is exposed, reversed, or suddenly understood — the pivot points beneath the novel's quiet surface. Early revelations about the billionaire's self-interest and the neighbor's contradictions establish the book's preoccupation with the gap between performed and actual truth. Characters like Ryan, Angeliki, and Panitois reveal the strategies and illusions that have governed their lives, while Penelope and Melete articulate something rawer about the overwhelmed or endangered self. The neighbor's confession of infidelity shifts everything about his earlier storytelling, and Faye realizes her passive approach to life cannot shield her from male desire. The pool ends with Anne, who arrives as a mirror image of Faye but has already found what Faye is still seeking: the first outline of a new self.
