Pool 1 follows the headline events of Beth Macy's memoir, tracing Silas James's promising start as a drum major and scholarship recipient whose path to community college is derailed by a broken-down car and a family crisis. His subsequent suicide attempt reveals the depth of the trauma he carries, even as Macy frames his story against her own escape from poverty through a fully funded Pell Grant. The 2020 presidential election intersects with Macy's family when her sister Cookie immediately rejects Biden's victory at their mother's hospice bedside, exposing political fractures dividing the country and Macy's own household. Silas rebounds in the fall of 2023, re-enrolling at Clark State and excelling at welding, but his progress is shadowed by a confrontational interview in which Cookie denies her daughter's sexual abuse and condemns Macy's gay son. By 2024, the Springfield Haitian hoax inflames local fears, Silas's mother relapses and loses custody of her children, and Trump's electoral victory is followed by the death of Macy's radicalized ex-boyfriend. Together these events trace upward mobility as a policy-dependent pathway that has been systematically dismantled for the generation after Macy's own.

Pool 2 captures the significant supporting storylines that fill out the memoir's portrait of Urbana's decline. The backstory of Macy's mother Sarah's financial survival and the long-buried sexual abuse of Macy's niece Liza—reported to authorities but never prosecuted—establish a pattern of institutional failure and family denial that echoes throughout the book. These failures are mirrored in present-day Urbana, where the Urbana Youth Center loses critical state funding due to city officials' hostility, and attendance officer Brooke Perry faces mounting crises: a dangerous sovereign citizens' home visit, a past near-fatal car crash, soaring absenteeism rates, and a violent assault by a struggling student. A high school reunion exposes the community's conspiracy-theory underbelly through classmate Terri Thompson's QAnon beliefs, while a family celebration of life brings a rare moment of reconnection when Macy's estranged brother Tim reconciles with the family. The pool closes with Youth Center director Justin Weller filing a federal civil rights lawsuit against city officials and, on a more hopeful note, Silas proposing to his boyfriend on Christmas Eve.

Pool 3 traces the memoir's pivotal revelations and emotional turning points, beginning with young Macy's formative experience of class shame on a school trip and the slow death of Grimes Manufacturing that hollowed out Urbana's economy. Key personal disclosures unfold across the middle chapters: Macy's private pregnancy termination, a Christmas Eve rescue of a runaway niece, and Cookie's shocking admission that her marriage is loveless and controlled by her husband. Silas's mother's evolution from anti-LGBTQ prejudice to full acceptance of her trans son offers one of the book's rare portraits of genuine personal change rooted in direct experience. The back half of the pool documents a cascade of reckoning: Macy's ex-boyfriend Bill's radicalization, historians' revelations about the 1897 lynching of Charles Mitchell, and a tense fact-checking session in which Cookie's pastor is revealed as the force suppressing Liza's abuse allegations. The pool ends with Cookie's first truly independent decision in decades and the Trump administration's post-election pardons and rollback of transgender rights, placing intimate personal choices in stark relief against national political consequence.
