On the morning of departure, Manami discovers that the family cannot take their dog Yujiin with them.

Soldiers discover Yujiin hidden inside Manami's coat while the family waits to board a bus to the mainland.

Soldiers take Yujiin away and place him in a crate; Manami screams, then stops speaking entirely.

The Tanaka family arrives at Manzanar, a desolate concentration camp in the California desert surrounded by barbed wire.

Camp police offer to release Ron but warn he is no longer safe at Manzanar and must transfer to another camp.

Ron's unexpected arrival gives Manami hope, until she realizes he is now a prisoner just like the rest of them. A group of masked men beats a camp resident overnight, and a riot breaks out at Manzanar shortly afterward.

Before the removal, life on Bainbridge Island is full of warmth and routine, making the family's sudden displacement all the more painful. At Manzanar, Grandfather's refusal to eat and Manami's continued silence reflect the deep psychological wounds that imprisonment inflicts on the whole family. Small acts of friendship from Kimmi and incremental steps toward normalcy — Mother taking a job, news of a school opening — help the family inch forward through impossible circumstances. Manami's attempts to communicate with Yujiin through letters and drawings released into the wind reveal how desperately she clings to hope and magical thinking. A riot at the camp and the shocking discovery of Ron's secret relationship with Miss Rosalie mark two of the story's most destabilizing turning points.

From the moment Grandfather explains why the soldiers fear their family, to the devastating train journey that strips Manami of her voice, the early story is defined by revelations Manami can barely absorb. At Manzanar, each small breakthrough — a drawing praised by Miss Rosalie, Grandfather finally walking Manami to school — signals a fragile step toward healing amid overwhelming grief. Ron's refusal to enlist in the army and the painful secret of his relationship with Rosalie show how high the stakes are for every member of the Tanaka family. Grandfather's firm insistence that Manami must stop waiting for Yujiin, and his quiet insight that caring for a new dog could restore her voice, set the stage for the novel's resolution. When the bus finally pulls away from Manzanar, Manami's whispered words to her family mark her hard-won return to herself.
