Paradise opens on nine armed men from Ruby searching the Convent for the women they believe threaten their town's purity. Ruby itself was born from the painful history of Haven, an all-Black town whose founders were repeatedly rejected before building their own paradise, only to lose it to outside influence. Across several chapters, each of the five Convent women—Mavis, Gigi, Pallas, Seneca, and Consolata—arrives at the mansion running from a broken life, drawn into a fragile community of healing. The tension between Ruby and the Convent escalates through the wedding reception incident, where the women's uninhibited behavior makes them clear targets for the town's fear and resentment. After Consolata guides the women through a healing ritual called loud dreaming, the men of Ruby carry out their violent raid and Steward Morgan shoots Consolata. In the eerie aftermath, all the women's bodies vanish, and Consolata is glimpsed at peace on a beach called paradise.

The Convent's layered history—from embezzler's mansion to Catholic school to women's refuge—sets the stage for the novel's conflicts, while individual characters arrive at their turning points through personal crises of their own. Within Ruby, tensions rise as the Oven's faded inscription sparks generational conflict, the Morgan-Fleetwood feud erupts after K.D. slaps Arnette, and a lost white family's death in the blizzard signals the town's dangerous insularity. Seneca's weeks of exploitation and Gigi's discovery that her boyfriend's story was entirely fabricated underscore how broken and directionless each woman is before the Convent takes her in. Patricia Best Cato's painstaking genealogy work exposes the town's colorist hierarchy, an uncomfortable truth she ultimately destroys rather than share, while the Christmas play quietly mirrors Haven's founding trauma. The aftermath of the Convent attack ripples through the community as the Oven leans in softened ground, a symbol of Ruby's destabilized foundations, and small acts of reconciliation begin among those left behind.

The secondary stories and community moments behind Ruby's unraveling.

Mother Superior takes nine-year-old Consolata off the streets of Brazil and eventually brings her to the United States.

Consolata and Deek Morgan begin a secret extramarital affair after meeting when she travels with Mother Superior.

Soane Morgan visits the Convent to confront Consolata directly about the secret affair with her husband Deek.

After repenting her affair with Deek, Consolata's vision shifts permanently so that she sees best in darkness.

Consolata sinks into depression after Mother Superior's death, drinking heavily in the cellar and wishing for her own death.

Reverend Misner decides to remain in Ruby after Save-Marie's funeral, committed to helping the broken community heal.

The origins of Ruby and the Convent are rooted in turning points that echo across generations: the New Fathers carry the iron Oven from Haven as a symbol of continuity, and Zechariah's mystical encounter gives the founding journey its spiritual authority. The Convent's own transformation begins when Mother Superior rescues young Consolata from the streets of Brazil, setting in motion a life devoted to healing others. Consolata's secret affair with Deek Morgan and Soane's confrontation of her mark a personal rupture that permanently changes how Consolata sees both the world and herself. As the Convent women grow into a community, key emotional moments—Pallas weeping on Consolata's lap, the women dancing in the rain together—signal their collective transformation from broken fugitives into something whole. The raid becomes a moment of moral reckoning as Deek's hesitation and public contradiction of Steward reveal a fracture at the very heart of Ruby's leadership. In the end, Reverend Misner's decision to stay in the broken town offers a quiet but determined promise of renewal.
