Alfons joins the Hitler Youth on Hitler's 49th birthday, reciting a death pledge and leaping off a diving board as a courage test.

Alfons travels to the Nuremberg rally, where Hitler addresses 80,000 Hitler Youth members and declares they will rule the world.

During Kristallnacht, Alfons watches SA men smash the Wittlich synagogue's crystal window, mock the Torah, and arrest Jewish residents.

Nazi Germany invades Holland, trapping Helen and Siegfried; they desperately attempt to flee on a ship to England.

Helen and Siegfried hand their daughter Doris to an anonymous non-Jewish family to hide her from the Nazis.

Two Gestapo officers and two Dutch police find Helen and Siegfried in hiding and deport them to Westerbork transit camp.

Helen and Siegfried arrive at Auschwitz in crowded cattle cars, are separated on arrival, and she never sees him again.

As German forces collapse, Alfons is repeatedly promoted until he commands 6,000 young troops near the Belgian border.

Russian soldiers liberate the Kratzau labor camp, and Helen, having survived the Holocaust, kisses a field of lilies in celebration.

American forces occupy Wittlich and recruit Alfons as a translator, then dismiss him after learning he was a top Hitler Youth leader.

Helen reads Alfons's articles about the Hitler Youth, calls him, and they form an unlikely lecturing partnership dubbed the Odd Couple.

Parallel Journeys follows two Germans whose lives are transformed by Hitler's rise to power: Alfons Heck, a devoted Hitler Youth member, and Helen Waterford, a Jewish woman struggling to survive. As Alfons rises through the Hitler Youth ranks and witnesses the Nazi regime's escalating violence, Helen endures relentless persecution, forced exile from Germany, and the heartbreak of hiding her young daughter. The Nazis eventually discover Helen and her husband Siegfried and deport them to Auschwitz, where they are separated forever. While Alfons commands thousands of young troops in a collapsing war, Helen fights to survive the death camp and is ultimately liberated by Soviet forces. After the war, both grapple with their pasts—Alfons through trials and guilt, Helen through a hard journey home—and they eventually unite as an unlikely duo to lecture the world about the dangers of hatred.

Japan bombs the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, and President Roosevelt declares war, bringing the United States into World War II.

Alfons joins the elite Flieger Hitlerjugend junior air force and makes his first glider flight, dreaming of becoming a Luftwaffe pilot.

Righteous Gentile Jo Vis, who has been hiding Jews in Holland, is arrested by the Nazis and sent to Dachau.

Alfons is driven to a heavily armored train and personally meets Hitler, calling the encounter the most glorious day of his life.

Helen passes the deadly selection performed by Dr. Josef Mengele, who sends a nearby mother and child to their deaths while sparing Helen.

Allied bombers strike Wittlich on Christmas Eve, killing a mother in Alfons's shelter and leaving his horse and dog dead.

Helen and her daughter Doris arrive in New York and travel to Chicago to live with Helen's parents.

Pool 2 captures the quieter but equally significant moments that set the stage for the larger tragedy in both characters' lives. Helen's independent spirit emerges early as she refuses an arranged marriage, builds a life in Amsterdam, and works cleverly with a local carpenter to protect her family's belongings from Nazi confiscation. Alfons discovers his passion for flying through the elite Flieger Hitlerjugend, while key figures around Helen—her father, Siegfried's mother, and their Righteous Gentile protector Jo Vis—each face the brutal reach of Nazi persecution in different ways. America's entry into the war following the attack on Pearl Harbor expands the global conflict, and Helen must confront the nightmare of Auschwitz's selection process up close. A prisoner revolt inside Auschwitz and the Allied bombing of Wittlich on Christmas Eve both make the horror of war viscerally real, and the pool closes with Helen and Doris finally reaching safety in the United States.

The personal stories and pivotal moments behind the main narrative.

Helen stands up to Siegfried's disapproving mother over tea and pastries, declaring she will become a Wohlfarth no matter what.

Alfons's father ridicules his Hitler Youth uniform as a monkey suit, but Alfons ignores him and remains devoted to the Nazis.

Heinz Ermann visits Alfons's farm before leaving for Cologne; the two boys say nothing meaningful, and their childhood friendship ends.

Helen and Siegfried deliberately stop hugging and kissing Doris to emotionally detach before sending her to live with strangers.

Alfons's grandmother comforts the weeping Frau Ermann and sends Alfons away when he dismisses Jewish suffering with Nazi propaganda.

Helen visits a fortune teller who predicts widowhood, a man named Max disrupting their lives, and a police visit—all of which come true.

Helen works at a Jewish Council kitchen and realizes the Council is lying—elderly deportees cannot possibly be sent east to labor.

A fellow prisoner points out the Auschwitz gas chamber and tells Helen the only way out of the camp is through the chimney.

Rather than flee, Alfons follows his orders and hands himself over to the next American military unit, choosing survival over escape.

As punishment, the French make Alfons dig up a mass grave of French POWs and rebury them; Alfons vomits from the horror.

After the war, Helen travels back to Kratzau and feels deep pride that she survived and maintained her humanity in the camp.

A high school student asks Alfons whether he would have killed Helen if ordered to; Alfons honestly answers that he would have.

Pool 3 focuses on the moments of personal choice and revelation that define Alfons and Helen as individuals rather than as symbols. Early turning points show Helen's fierce independence and Alfons's willing surrender to Nazi ideology, including his cold abandonment of his only Jewish friend and his defiance of his father. As the war tightens its grip, Helen uncovers the deadly truth behind Nazi deportations, and Alfons is forced to wrestle with the cost of absolute obedience when a flying order nearly kills him. Helen's arrival at Auschwitz strips away every illusion about survival, while Lieutenant Hans Leiwitz plants a crucial seed of doubt in Alfons that helps him choose life over a meaningless death. After the war, both characters face moral reckoning—Alfons through mass graves and public scrutiny, Helen through a triumphant return to the site of her imprisonment—and their joint legacy is sealed when Alfons's honest admission about his wartime mindset captures exactly what their lectures are meant to teach.

The key decisions, discoveries, and moral reckonings that define each character.
