The story begins with Munira arriving as a schoolteacher in the impoverished, drought-ravaged village of Ilmorog, where he gradually befriends outsiders Abdulla, Wanja, and the idealistic Karega. A prolonged drought forces the community to send a delegation to the city, where they confront their corrupt parliamentary representative and are arrested before a lawyer wins their freedom and press coverage brings relief. The construction of the Pan-African highway then transforms Ilmorog into a commercial hub, but this growth comes at the cost of the original villagers, who are stripped of their land through predatory banking schemes. Nyakinyua dies as her warnings go unheeded, while Wanja loses the Theng'eta brewery to a corporation and opens a brothel to reclaim power over the wealthy men who exploit her. Karega returns and organizes a workers' union to fight back against neocolonial oppression, while Munira, consumed by obsession, watches from the margins. The story closes when Munira burns down the brothel to 'save' Karega from Wanja's influence, killing three powerful businessmen in the blaze.

Munira's brief moment of pride at being named Headmaster is shattered when a government invitation for tea turns out to be a coerced loyalty oath. After separately drifting through the city, Munira, Wanja, and Karega reunite by chance and return to Ilmorog together, reigniting the community before the delegation sets out. On the journey, the group faces a child's illness, religious hypocrisy from Reverend Brown, and violent capture by Kimeria's men, until Wanja's connection to a sympathetic lawyer provides shelter and hope. Once the highway reshapes Ilmorog, Riera returns to claim credit and imposes the bewildering system of title deeds that will ultimately dispossess the villagers. The final events expose personal betrayals in New Ilmorog — Wanja charging Munira for sex, Abdulla heroically rescuing her from the fire, and Inspector Godfrey protecting the powerful by ignoring human trafficking.

From early in the story, small revelations expose each character's hidden wounds — Munira admits his cowardice, Wanja strategically manipulates him into her bed, and her sudden departure signals the instability beneath the group's bond. The delegation's encounter with the lawyer becomes a political awakening, revealing to Karega that even legal systems are instruments of continued colonial oppression. The Theng'eta ceremony becomes the novel's emotional core, unlocking buried histories: Karega's grief over Mukami's suicide and Abdulla's guilt over surviving while his comrade Nding'uri was betrayed and killed. These revelations fracture the group — Munira fires Karega, Wanja confesses her manipulation, and Karega leaves Ilmorog for years of wandering. When Karega eventually returns, his relationship with Wanja collapses under the weight of their opposing worldviews, and she risks her safety to warn him of mortal danger. The novel's most explosive revelation closes the story: Wanja confesses she stabbed Kimeria herself before the fire even began.

The confessions, discoveries, and emotional breaks that define each character's inner arc.
