Matt calls home and describes his traumatic brain injury as just a bump on the head to protect his mother.

Looking out the hospital window, Matt recognizes the Iraqi boy from his flashbacks as Ali, his 10-year-old friend.

Celebratory gunfire outside the hospital triggers Matt's flashback of a boy being shot and lifted into the air in the alley.

Matt tells evaluator Meaghan Finnerty that the boy he believes was shot in the alley was Ali and that he killed him.

Lieutenant Colonel Fuchs informs Matt that locals have formally claimed a 10-year-old civilian named Ali was killed intentionally.

Matt realizes with a sickening certainty that the misshapen body bag he spotted earlier on a hospital gurney contained Ali's remains.

Lieutenant Brody dismisses Ali's death as collateral damage and closes the investigation without asking Matt a single question.

Before leaving the hospital, Matt gives his Purple Heart to Father Brennan, who promises to hold it until Matt is ready.

Matt rejoins his squad in Sadr City and is welcomed back with relieved hugs during an ongoing cease-fire.

Sneaking away from patrol, Matt examines the alley and determines Ali's body fell at an angle proving he was shot from Justin's window.

A little Iraqi girl gives Matt a thumbs-up through a fence, and Matt runs into the street and kicks a soccer ball into the sky.

Matt Duffy wakes in an Iraqi military hospital with a traumatic brain injury and almost no memory of how he was injured. His squad mate Justin fills in some details, but haunting images of a boy shot in an alley grow until Matt recognizes the victim as Ali, the 10-year-old Iraqi boy he had befriended. Military officers question Matt about Ali's death, but before Matt can speak the truth, the investigation is closed and the death labeled collateral damage. Cleared to return to his unit, Matt sneaks back to the alley and discovers the geometry of Ali's fall proves Justin, not Matt, was the shooter. The cease-fire is shattered when a suicide bomber kills two of Matt's closest squad members, Charlene and Wolf. The story ends with Matt frozen in grief until a young Iraqi girl's simple gesture of recognition allows him to reconnect with the world.

Army chaplain Father Brennan visits Matt and offers comfort through prayer, faith, and a Barry Zito baseball mantra.

Dr. Kwong explains that Matt's brain injury may cause lasting trouble with memory, emotional regulation, and processing information.

Matt recalls organizing Iraqi kids into soccer teams with Ali, including the day Ali slipped into a Communion line just to eat a wafer.

During his first evaluation with Meaghan, Matt cannot recall the word for raincoat and angrily scatters her stack of cards.

Matt recalls tackling Justin to stop him from kicking a pitiful old Iraqi man after their first squad leader, Sergeant Benson, was killed by an IED.

Fellow patient Francis gives Matt a notebook and urges him to write down everything he remembers about the alley incident.

Matt receives a letter from his girlfriend Caroline full of trivial high-school concerns, and her worries leave him frustrated and distant.

Francis is removed from the medical ward and sent away from the hospital because of his pill addiction.

Both Meaghan and Dr. Kwong formally clear Matt to return to his unit, with Dr. Kwong quietly noting his leg weakness.

Matt asks his sister Lizzy to tell family visitors to use the side door, echoing the arrangement Francis made for his own wife.

Bored during the cease-fire, the squad plays an impromptu game of capture the flag using their night vision goggles.

During an early-morning conversation outside the barracks, Charlene tells Matt he seems different now, and Matt notices warmth in her eyes.

While waiting for medics after the bombing, Justin tells Matt he shot Ali because Ali was a spotter relaying Matt's position to insurgents.

Back at the barracks, Matt packs Wolf's belongings to send home and collapses sobbing as the Humvee drives away.

Matt helps Sergeant McNally set up two memorials — rifles, helmets, and boots — for Charlene and Wolf on the base playground.

While recovering from his brain injury, Matt relies on the steady comfort of hospital chaplain Father Brennan and the frank guidance of evaluator Meaghan Finnerty. His warm memories of Ali — the boy's Communion wafer trick, his artwork, their soccer games — deepen Matt's guilt even before he fully understands what happened in the alley. A breezy letter from his girlfriend Caroline, full of high-school trivialities, underscores how completely the war has changed Matt's perspective. Fellow patient Francis, who accidentally killed his own squad leader, plants a notebook in Matt's hands and a fear of prison in his mind before being sent away. Returned to his squad during a cease-fire, Matt slowly bonds with Charlene and begins to see beneath her toughness, only to lose her to a suicide bomber. After the bombing, Justin finally confesses the truth about Ali, and Matt must pack Wolf's belongings and stand at a memorial that brings the full cost of war into heartbreaking focus.

The friendships, small confessions, and supporting moments that shape Matt's recovery.

When Matt insists there was a stray dog in the alley, Justin denies it and refuses to meet Matt's eyes.

Justin drops off Matt's duffel bag at the hospital and mentions he is receiving a medal for saving Matt's life.

Matt takes out his girlfriend Caroline's photo and realizes she now feels as distant and unreal to him as a celebrity magazine image.

Francis warns Matt that soldiers convicted of killing an Iraqi civilian face a prison sentence of 20 years.

Francis reveals he accidentally shot and killed his own squad leader in a dark firefight after mistaking a muzzle flash for the enemy.

Meaghan tells Matt that when something is too painful to process, the mind has a way of burying the memory entirely.

Matt kneels before Father Brennan in a makeshift supply-closet confessional but cannot get the words of his confession out.

Matt confronts Meaghan about telling investigators his memory is unreliable, and she quietly confirms she acted to protect him.

Matt writes a letter to Caroline about the blurred lines of right and wrong in Iraq, then crumples it and throws it in the trash.

Back with the squad, Matt notices that Justin is deliberately avoiding being alone with him.

On patrol near a market, Matt irrationally aims his weapon at an innocent old man holding a wrench after hearing an Arabic love song.

Justin corners Matt and warns him not to mess things up, then walks away before Matt can ask any questions.

Sergeant McNally quietly reveals he knows Matt sneaked off alone during patrol and warns him never to do it again.

Picturing Ali's death one final time, Matt remembers that Ali was wearing soccer cleats that could only have come from the insurgents.

Sergeant McNally tells Matt directly that what happened in the alley with Ali was not Matt's fault.

From his first day in the hospital, small cracks in Justin's story — a denied dog, an averted gaze — signal to Matt that he is not getting the full truth about what happened in the alley. As Matt processes the possibility that he killed Ali, he grapples with guilt through a failed confession, a discarded letter to Caroline, and the terrifying math of a 20-year prison sentence. Evaluator Meaghan Finnerty becomes Matt's quiet protector, steering investigators away from him while helping him understand that his brain may be shielding him from an unbearable memory. Returning to duty, Matt finds Justin evasive and himself dangerously on edge, aiming his weapon at a harmless old man and sneaking away from patrol to seek his own answers. When Matt recalls that Ali's soccer cleats could only have come from the insurgents, the moral ground shifts entirely, and he must reckon with what his friendship with Ali actually cost. Sergeant McNally's quiet absolution offers Matt the forgiveness he cannot yet grant himself.

The key decisions, discoveries, and emotional turning points that define Matt's moral journey.
