The story begins with Nazi Germany's invasion of the Netherlands, forcing ordinary citizens like Emilie and her husband Willem to make impossible moral choices under occupation. American soldiers—among them Robert Cole, Chaplain Fowlkes, and Monuments Man Hutch Huchthausen—train, deploy, and fight their way across Europe, each driven by a distinct sense of duty. The liberation of Maastricht marks a turning point, but the war's human cost mounts through the deaths of Cole, Fowlkes, and Hutch in quick succession. Jefferson Wiggins and his segregated unit are ordered to bury the American dead at the newly established Margraten cemetery under grueling conditions, confronting racism and death simultaneously. After Germany's surrender, Emilie channels her gratitude into a transatlantic goodwill mission, advocating for the grave adoption program that would define Margraten's legacy. The pool closes with Frieda's wedding day, when she lays her bridal bouquet on Hutch's grave—a gesture that captures the book's central promise of remembrance.

Robert Cole's early ambition, Bill Hughes's humiliating encounter with General Patton, and Chaplain Fowlkes's enlistment all establish the human dimensions behind military service. The deaths of the Norton twins and the wartime birth of Fowlkes's daughter Betsy show the war's reach into the most intimate corners of family life. After liberation, Dutch civilians and American soldiers forge unexpected bonds—through chaperoned dances, Christmas dinners, and cave tours—that would outlast the conflict itself. The pool tracks the creation and growth of the Civilian Committee Margraten, from Joseph van Laar's single promise to a nationwide movement of grave adopters. The aftermath of these losses—conveyed through returned letters, unmarked graves, and a massive public ceremony—shows how grief transforms into collective remembrance.
