Geoffrey Crayon introduces the story of Rip Van Winkle as a tale found among the papers of fictional historian Diedrich Knickerbocker.

Rip Van Winkle, a lazy but good-natured man, is introduced living with his wife and children in a quiet Kaatskill Mountain village.

Rip is described as a descendant of a prominent Dutch family with a deep aversion to all profitable labor.

Rip escapes his wife's constant scolding by spending lazy afternoons at the village tavern under the sign of King George.

Rip grabs his gun and heads into the Kaatskill woods with his dog Wolf to hunt squirrels.

A strange man dressed in Old Dutch clothing appears before Rip, carrying a heavy keg on his shoulders.

Rip and the stranger arrive at a mountain amphitheater where silent bearded men in strange clothing are playing ninepins.

Rip keeps drinking from the keg of liquor until he finally falls into a deep sleep.

Rip wakes stiff and sore to find the men gone, his dog Wolf missing, and his gun rusted.

Rip returns to his village and finds the people dressed strangely with no familiar faces among them.

Rip mirrors the villagers' chin-stroking gesture and discovers that his beard has grown a full foot long.

Rip finds his former home completely empty, run down, and overgrown — though Dame Van Winkle always kept it in order.

The village inn has been renamed the Union Hotel and now displays a portrait of George Washington instead of King George.

Rip discovers the woman he struck up a conversation with in the crowd is actually his grown daughter, Judith Gardenier.

Peter Vanderdonk confirms Rip's identity and tells the crowd that explorer Hendrick Hudson haunts the Kaatskills every twenty years.

Rip Van Winkle is a lazy but lovable man living in the Kaatskill Mountains who escapes his nagging wife by wandering the wilderness. A mysterious encounter with a strange Dutch stranger leads Rip to a supernatural group of bearded men playing ninepins in a mountain amphitheater. After drinking too much of their liquor, Rip falls into a deep sleep and wakes to find twenty years have passed. He returns to his village to find it transformed by the American Revolution — new faces, new loyalties, and a new name above the tavern door. Rip struggles to prove his own identity until his grown daughter and the village elder Peter Vanderdonk confirm who he is. Now an old man freed from his domestic duties, Rip embraces his new role as the village storyteller.

The headline story of Rip Van Winkle's sleep and awakening.

The story's epigraph features a speaker swearing an oath to the Norse god Odin to tell only the truth.

Rip wins the affection of the entire village by running errands for women and playing with the local children.

Nicholas Vedder presides over lazy afternoons at the inn while schoolmaster Van Bummel reads news from old newspapers aloud.

Rip spends a long afternoon gazing out over the Hudson River Valley from high in the Kaatskill Mountains.

Rip hears his name called but sees only a crow flying overhead before the strange man finally appears.

Rip and the stranger carry the heavy keg together up a dry ravine in complete silence.

Every time the ninepins ball strikes the pins in the amphitheater, it sounds like a clap of thunder.

Following the lead of the man who brought him there, Rip serves the bearded men liquor from the keg.

Rip returns to the mountain amphitheater after waking and finds only an impenetrable wall of solid rock in its place.

Rip discovers that the dry ravine he had climbed on his way up has become a rushing river.

The Union Hotel buzzes with loud political arguments, a sharp contrast to the lazy afternoons Rip remembers at the old inn.

Rip swears loyalty to the King in front of the village crowd, and they immediately accuse him of being a British spy.

When Rip claims his identity, the villagers point across the crowd to a young man they say is Rip Van Winkle.

An old woman steps forward from the crowd and identifies Rip as the man who vanished from the village long ago.

Rip settles into comfortable old age, becoming the village gossip and storyteller while living with his daughter and her husband.

Washington Irving frames his tale with a fictional historian's oath to truth, setting up the story's playful relationship with fact and legend. Before his mountain adventure, Rip is a beloved fixture of village life, charming neighbors at the inn while Nicholas Vedder and schoolmaster Van Bummel hold lazy court. His journey into the Kaatskills is filled with strange details — a crow calling his name, a silent hike up a dry ravine, and ninepins that sound like rolling thunder. When Rip wakes and tries to return, he finds the mountain itself has erased all evidence of the strange encounter. Back in the village, the Union Hotel pulses with political energy and the crowd turns hostile when Rip's loyalties appear dangerously out of date. Ultimately, an old woman's recognition and a young man's troubling resemblance help resolve the mystery of Rip's identity and long absence.

The supporting details and secondary scenes of Rip's extraordinary journey.

Knickerbocker is introduced as a historian beloved by common folk but distrusted by academics who cannot verify his sources.

Dame Van Winkle's relentless scolding drives Rip away from farm duties, leaving his farm the worst-conditioned in the neighborhood.

Rip's children are described as ragged and wild, left to fend for themselves while their father avoids domestic responsibilities.

Rip loses track of time exploring a wild mountain glen and suddenly realizes he cannot make it home before nightfall.

The bearded men's grave expressions and strange old-fashioned clothing remind Rip of figures he has seen in a Flemish painting.

Rip, described as a naturally thirsty soul, finds the sight of the keg's liquor irresistible and drinks more and more.

Rip begins the long hike back down the mountain, finding the paths unfamiliar and the landscape changed around him.

Wolf, once Rip's faithful companion, now old and mean, growls and snaps at his returned master.

The village crowd grows suspicious of Rip and presses him to declare which side he voted for in the election.

As Rip names his old friends one by one, he learns that each has either died in the war or left the village.

After a man who looks exactly like him is declared to be Rip Van Winkle, Rip starts to doubt his own sanity.

Judith tells Rip that Dame Van Winkle died not long after Rip disappeared, freeing him at last from his troubled marriage.

Satisfied by the explanation of Rip's identity, the crowd quickly disperses to attend to the more important concerns of the election.

Crayon adds a closing note acknowledging that Rip's tale likely derives from a Germanic legend about a goatherd named Peter Klaus.

Knickerbocker's final note insists on the truth of Rip's story and even claims that Knickerbocker personally met the man himself.

The story's nested narrative frames establish from the start that truth in this tale is slippery, lovingly questioned by the fictional historian Knickerbocker. At home, Dame Van Winkle's harassment and Rip's irresponsibility create a household in crisis — ragged children, a ruined farm, and a restless escapist. On the mountain, Rip's curiosity and thirst lead him deeper into a supernatural trap, drinking more than he should from a keg that sends him to sleep for two decades. Waking to a changed world, Rip confronts a village that no longer knows his face, a dog that no longer knows his scent, and an identity that seems to belong to someone else entirely. The emotional peak arrives when Rip learns his wife has died and his daughter is a grown woman, before the crowd simply moves on to worry about the election. The story closes with competing claims to truth, as Crayon concedes the tale's folklore origins while Knickerbocker stubbornly insists he met Rip himself.
