Pool 3 traces the pivotal moments where Twain's journey turns, where decisions carry lasting consequences and comfortable illusions collapse. Early on, Twain half-jokingly tells the reader that his supposed three-month pleasure trip stretched to nearly seven years, a revelation that frames everything that follows as the result of choices made and chances missed. Throughout his time in Nevada, Twain repeatedly fails to act decisively — he quits mining in disgust, watches a cement mine scheme unravel, and fatally entrusts a lucrative silver deal to a friend rather than managing it himself. In Virginia City, Twain observes that the town's lawlessness is perpetuated by a jury system that systematically excludes informed citizens, a systemic critique that cuts against his usual comic tone. His journey to Hawaii brings stranger revelations still, including his argument that Captain Cook's death was deserved and his account of how a Hawaiian king's casual defiance of taboo inadvertently prepared his people for missionary conversion. The pool closes with Twain's most personal turning point: renting a lecture hall on credit and fully expecting failure, only to discover he had stumbled into his true calling.
