Pool 1 follows the core turning points that drive Sanctuary's main plot, from the moment a teenage girl is killed at the Great American Wall to Vali and Ernie's crossing of the Colorado River. The story escalates rapidly as the US government deploys the Deportation Force and announces sweeping immigration crackdowns, forcing Vali's family to flee Vermont. Mami is captured on a bus near Boston, leaving Vali alone to guide her eight-year-old brother across the country. They rely on a coyote driver who abandons them in the desert, then survive human trafficking, the death of young Tomas, and the capture of their travel companions. Despite losing nearly everyone, Vali and Ernie push forward, ultimately swimming the Colorado River under gunfire to reach the sanctuary of California.

Pool 2 illuminates the secondary events and quieter moments that give the main plot its emotional weight, beginning with the violent suppression of border protests and the silencing of Vali's community in Vermont. The steady disappearance of neighbors, teachers, and Kenna reveals how quickly the DF is dismantling everyday life, making escape feel both urgent and terrifying. The walk to New York City is marked by small human moments, including an accidental carousel ride and a night spent reading children's books in a library. Sister Lottie's church becomes a fragile safe haven before the coyote truck carries the group into far greater danger in Oklahoma.
