Christina Thompson opens at Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, where she visited with her Māori husband, Seven (Tauwhitu), and their three sons. The bay is the site of the Hikiau Heiau, a stone temple platform sacred to ancient Hawaiian religion, and where Captain James Cook was killed in 1779. Thompson uses this intersection of Polynesian and European histories to frame the book's central question: How did a single people, without writing, metal tools, maps, or compasses, colonize every habitable island in the Pacific Ocean? The area they settled, known as the Polynesian Triangle, encompasses 10 million square miles between Hawaiʻi, New Zealand, and Easter Island. Everywhere the family traveled, Seven was recognized and welcomed as kin by other Polynesians, a testament to an enduring web of interconnectedness. Thompson structures the book as a history of how people have tried to answer this question, from early explorers and linguists to modern geneticists and experimental voyagers.
Thompson begins with the Pacific itself: the largest feature on the planet, containing more area than all landmasses combined. The first migrants reached Australia and New Guinea during the last ice age, about 65,000 years ago, but progress stalled at the Solomon Islands for tens of thousands of years. About 4,000 years ago, a new seafaring people appeared in the western Pacific, the first to sail into the open ocean. European understanding of the Pacific began with Vasco Núñez de Balboa's 1513 sighting and Ferdinand Magellan's crossing of 1519–1522. For nearly three centuries, exploration was driven by the search for
Terra Australis Incognita, a hypothetical southern continent that was never found.
The first European contact with Polynesians occurred in 1595, when the Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña reached the Marquesas. His pilot, Pedro Fernández de Quirós, left the earliest description of any Polynesian society, noting the islanders' canoes, tattooing, and breadfruit. Contact was violent; the Spanish killed more than 200 Marquesans. At the Triangle's outermost points, Dutch East India Company navigator Abel Tasman reached New Zealand in 1642 but never landed after Māori warriors killed several of his crew. The Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen reached Easter Island in 1722, finding it treeless but home to enormous stone statues. Roggeveen was the first to note the physical resemblance among different Polynesian groups and to pose the question of their origins.
A turning point came with the discovery of Tahiti by Captain Samuel Wallis in 1767 and the subsequent voyages of Cook. In Tahiti, Cook met Tupaia, a high-ranking priest and navigator from the nearby island of Raʻiatea who provided Cook with the names and locations of some 70 islands spanning more than 2,000 miles. Tupaia joined the expedition and, upon reaching New Zealand, addressed Māori warriors in Tahitian and was immediately understood, demonstrating the linguistic kinship of peoples separated by thousands of miles of ocean. He also collaborated with Cook on a chart fusing European cartography with Tahitian navigation, which measured distances in sailing time rather than fixed coordinates. Cook's three voyages enabled him to visit every major island group and conclude that all the islanders shared a common origin based on physical similarity, parallel material cultures, and consistent languages.
In the nineteenth century, missionaries, whalers, and traders transformed the Pacific, while introduced diseases devastated Polynesian populations; the Hawaiian population declined from roughly 250,000 to less than 40,000 in a single century. As Europeans learned Polynesian languages, oral traditions emerged as a new form of evidence. Thompson explores the epistemological gap between European and Polynesian ways of knowing: In oral cultures, all knowledge was stored in memory, while Europeans sought to convert this material into sequential written histories. Abraham Fornander, a Swedish immigrant to Hawaiʻi who married a Hawaiian woman of chiefly descent, spent decades collecting chants and genealogies, producing the first comprehensive history of Polynesian migration. S. Percy Smith, co-founder of the Polynesian Society, constructed detailed chronologies including New Zealand's iconic stories of Kupe the discoverer and the Great Fleet. Later scholars showed these canonical histories had been heavily edited and composited by their European compilers, and the prestige of tradition-based histories declined.
The early twentieth century brought professional anthropology and archaeology to the problem. Te Rangi Hiroa (Peter Buck) was a half-Māori, half-Irish anthropologist who directed the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. He proposed that Polynesian ancestors migrated through Micronesia rather than Melanesia, partly because of racist associations attached to the term Melanesian in European discourse. In New Zealand, excavations at Wairau Bar confirmed that the moa hunters were culturally Polynesian, representing an earlier cultural phase rather than a separate people. Radiocarbon dating, developed in the late 1940s, provided the first objective chronologies. The discovery of Lapita pottery proved crucial: Found across a 2,500-mile swath from the Bismarck Archipelago to Samoa at sites dating to around 1000 BC, this distinctively decorated ceramic represented the earliest human presence east of the Solomon Islands. The Lapita people, coastal colonists, were the immediate ancestors of the Polynesians; their expansion corresponded to the spread of Oceanic Austronesian, the subgroup of the vast Austronesian language family from which all Polynesian languages descend.
A mid-century debate tested whether Polynesians were deliberate navigators or accidental castaways. In 1947, Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl sailed a balsa-wood raft from Peru to the Tuamotus, arguing that Polynesia was settled from South America. The
Kon-Tiki expedition became a global sensation, but most scholars rejected the theory. In 1956, New Zealand historian Andrew Sharp argued that all settlement of remote islands was accidental. A 1964 computer simulation tested Sharp's hypothesis: Out of more than 120,000 simulated drift voyages, Hawaiʻi, New Zealand, and Easter Island proved essentially unreachable, but adding the capacity to steer made successful crossings probable. The physician and sailor David Lewis sailed with surviving traditional navigators, documenting methods including star paths, ocean swells, and the Carolinian
etak system, a framework in which the canoe remains conceptually stationary while reference islands move past successive stars.
In 1976, the Polynesian Voyaging Society launched
Hōkūleʻa, a 60-foot replica double-hulled canoe, from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti. The Carolinian navigator Pius Piailug (Mau) guided the canoe 2,600 miles without instruments. A 1978 second voyage attempt ended in disaster when the canoe capsized and crew member Eddie Aikau was lost at sea. Nainoa Thompson, a young Hawaiian deeply affected by Aikau's death, spent years mastering non-instrumental navigation by synthesizing Mau's teaching with modern astronomy. He navigated
Hōkūleʻa to Tahiti in 1980, and the canoe eventually completed a voyage around the world, conclusively demonstrating the feasibility of traditional Polynesian navigation.
Recent advances in genetics and radiocarbon dating have further reshaped the picture. DNA studies revealed that Polynesians carry a distinctive mitochondrial mutation traceable to the Philippines and Indonesia, while Y-chromosome studies pointed to Melanesian paternal ancestry. Ancient DNA from a Lapita cemetery in Vanuatu showed that the earliest Lapita people had essentially no Melanesian ancestry, indicating this genetic component entered the lineage later. Rigorous reevaluation of radiocarbon dates in the 1990s compressed the settlement timeline: No major archipelago is now thought to have been settled before the end of the first millennium AD. This revised chronology closely matches timelines that nineteenth-century scholars like Fornander and Smith extracted from Polynesian oral traditions.
Thompson concludes by reflecting on the convergence of scientific and traditional knowledge. She argues that the most compelling insights have arrived when different ways of seeing intersect: Tupaia and Cook at the chart table, Fornander translating Hawaiian chants, Lewis studying Tevake, a traditional navigator from the Santa Cruz Reef Islands. She acknowledges that the question of Polynesian origins has always been shaped by outsiders, and that Polynesian scholars have insisted the past belongs first to those whose ancestors lived it. The book closes at Anaho Bay in Nuku Hiva, where Thompson imagines the unknowable moment when the first canoe appeared on the horizon of an uninhabited island, the beginning of the greatest maritime migration in human history.
