Plot Summary

Henley Evans is a twenty-eight-year-old marketing manager at Seaquest Adventures, an adventure cruise line based in Seattle. Ambitious and driven, she pursues an MBA at night while working long hours, her life governed by task lists and professional goals. Her main companion is Noodles, an ugly rescue cat with divergent eyes.

Henley's chief frustration is Graeme Crawford-Collins, the company's social media manager, who works remotely from Michigan. She has resented him since their boss, James Wilcox, the chief marketing officer, publicly credited Graeme for a viral monkey video that Henley created. Graeme responded only with "Thank you," and Henley, too stunned to correct the record, let the slight fester into a year of animosity. His curt, one-word emails and what she perceives as an overly friendly rapport with James deepen her conviction that he is a conniving credit-stealer.

When Henley learns she is on the short list for a new director of digital marketing position, she discovers Graeme is also being considered. James announces that both will travel on a company cruise to the Galápagos Islands aboard the ship Discovery to draft competing marketing proposals; the best proposal wins the promotion. Throughout the meeting, James patronizes Henley, calling her "kid" and "sweetheart," while Graeme, secretly listening on speakerphone, overhears everything. Henley adds a new top priority to her to-do list: defeat Graeme Crawford-Collins.

Henley's younger sister Walsh arrives in Seattle unannounced, having been fired from her massage therapy job and fleeing a bad breakup. Henley reluctantly takes her in. Her coworker Christina Kim suggests Walsh join the cruise as an outside perspective, and James approves.

Aboard the Discovery, Henley meets Graeme in person for the first time and finds him strikingly handsome. He has arrived three days early and arranged with Gustavo Santos, the cruise leader, to conceal his corporate affiliation from guests. Henley outs him during the safety briefing to level the playing field. They declare "game on." Meanwhile, Dr. Nikolai Kozlov, a chiropractor on his canceled honeymoon, begins pursuing Henley romantically.

Walsh falls ill from contaminated ice, leaving Henley alone on the first excursion. During a hike on Española Island, Graeme confronts Henley about her hostility. She reveals the viral video incident, and he explains that his original work phone had terrible reception; he likely did not hear James's comments and responded reflexively. He challenges her for never speaking up. Henley confirms through an IT contact that his phone was replaced shortly after he started, validating his story. She apologizes, and they agree to be "friendly acquaintances."

That afternoon, Henley faces her deep-water fear during snorkeling, rooted in a childhood waterskiing accident that nearly killed her. Graeme, an experienced scuba diver, coaches her with a flotation belt and breathing exercises until she succeeds. They encounter tropical fish, baby sea lions, and a reef shark, and Henley experiences a sense of wonder she has not felt in years. After surfacing, a charged moment passes between them before she pushes him away, accusing him of underestimating her. Graeme tells her she actually likes him but is too afraid to admit it.

Walsh, trying to repay Henley for taking her in and give her a competitive edge, begins flirting with Graeme to distract him. On Floreana Island, Henley, jealous and distracted, falls out of a kayak and scatters a flock of flamingoes. Gustavo threatens to report the incident, but Graeme intervenes with video evidence that the guests were not upset. Later, in Henley's cabin, their attraction surges and Graeme asks to kiss her, but Walsh walks in. Walsh confesses the flirting was only strategy and urges Henley to pursue him.

On the beach at Post Office Bay, where visitors leave postcards in a barrel for future travelers to deliver, Henley tells Graeme about Sean, a coworker at a previous job who exploited their romance to steal her ideas, forcing her to resign. The experience left her terrified of mixing work and romance. Graeme promises to respect her boundaries, and Henley kisses him. She writes herself a postcard reading "Keep chasing sharks" and places it in the barrel.

A breakthrough arrives at the tortoise breeding center on Santa Cruz Island. Henley meets Analisa Mendoza, Seaquest's regional liaison, and her husband, Dr. Douglas Shaw, an Australian entomologist. Doug shows Henley a dead baby finch killed by an invasive parasitic fly and explains that conservation funding is desperately needed. Henley's idea crystallizes: a conservation initiative in which Seaquest solicits donations from guests to support local research, using ecotourism as a cornerstone of digital marketing. James grudgingly approves a trial run, and the program raises over sixteen thousand dollars.

On the second-to-last evening, Graeme performs ABBA's "Take a Chance on Me" directed at Henley, a song meaningful to him because his late mother loved ABBA. They slip away to her cabin but are interrupted by Nikolai, who confesses lingering feelings for his ex-fiancée, and then by Gustavo. Graeme emerges from the bathroom shirtless to deflect from Nikolai's presence, inadvertently revealing their relationship to the cruise leader. Henley is furious, and a bitter argument follows: Graeme tells her she will never be happy if all she does is work, and she retorts that he has been hiding from the world since his mother's death. Both are deeply hurt.

That night, Walsh reveals the full truth about her ex-boyfriend Keith: He was emotionally abusive and controlling, escalating to throwing a dinner plate at her. She has been secretly texting him throughout the cruise. Henley helps Walsh block his number and promises to be more present, acknowledging that her obsession with work has caused her to neglect their relationship. On the final morning, Henley apologizes to Graeme and calls him the most caring man she has ever known. He listens but says nothing.

Two weeks later in Seattle, Henley has reduced her course load, joined a recreational soccer team, and begun regular lunches with Walsh, who has started therapy. James awards the promotion to Graeme, dismissing Henley's conservation proposal as off-topic. Devastated, Henley is urged by Barbara, James's secretary, to take the idea directly to CEO Marlen Jones.

That evening, friends gather at Henley's apartment to scale up the proposal into a company-wide initiative. Graeme arrives unannounced from Michigan, summoned by Walsh. He delivers the postcard Henley wrote to herself, which he secretly retrieved from the barrel, and announces he plans to decline the promotion because she was not given a fair chance. Henley tells him she no longer wants the job, realizing she does not truly love digital marketing, and urges him to accept. They reconcile and begin a relationship.

Barbara then discovers that James has scheduled an emergency board meeting to present Henley's proposal as his own. File metadata still lists Henley as the author, and Barbara uncovers a two-year pattern of James stealing Henley's ideas. Henley rushes to the office and pitches her initiative directly to Marlen, who is enthusiastic. He confronts James and exposes the plagiarism. James is fired. On his way out, he calls Henley a nobody; she tells him not to forget her name.

Impressed by Henley's vision, Marlen and the board offer her the role of interim chief strategy officer, far exceeding her original aspirations. Henley asks for time to consider the details, demonstrating the balanced approach to her career she has newly embraced. Graeme confirms he will accept the digital marketing director position and move to Seattle. Henley deletes "Defeat Graeme Crawford-Collins" from her task list, having learned to balance ambition with the relationships and experiences that make life meaningful.
