Lorde opens Sister Outsider with her trip to the Soviet Union, where her outsider perspective as a Black American sharpens her critique of both socialism and American racism. She then establishes the foundational tools of liberation — poetry, the erotic, and self-definition — as essential to women's survival and resistance. Through direct responses to Robert Staples and Mary Daly, she confronts the ways Black men and white women weaponize oppression against Black women while claiming solidarity. Her reflection on raising her son Jonathan demonstrates that examining and redefining power must begin at home and in the body. Addressing academic feminists, she challenges them to embrace differences in race, class, and sexuality as sources of strength rather than threats.
