Kabuo Miyamoto's murder trial for the death of fisherman Carl Heine opens in the snow-blanketed San Piedro Island courthouse, drawing the entire community. Sheriff Moran and coroner Whaley testify about discovering Heine's body in his gillnet and the suspicious head wound that suggests possible foul play. The prosecution builds its case around the disputed seven acres of strawberry farmland, blood evidence found on a gaff aboard Kabuo's boat, and Susan Marie Heine's testimony that her husband expressed hostility toward Kabuo. A blizzard knocks out the island's power mid-trial, inadvertently sending reporter Ishmael Chambers to the Coast Guard station where he discovers a freighter report that could prove Heine's death was accidental. Hatsue and Kabuo both testify that Carl agreed to sell the land on the very night he died, eliminating the prosecution's motive. When Ishmael finally shares the critical report, the physical evidence it unlocks clears Kabuo entirely and he is freed.

Ishmael, Moran, and deputies search Heine's stored boat and find blood and cut lashing on the mast proving Carl fell from it.

Before the trial, the roots of the conflict were planted when Kabuo's father purchased disputed farmland, a deal disrupted by the forced internment of Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor. Hatsue and Ishmael's secret romance inside a hollow cedar tree bloomed during strawberry season but was overshadowed by escalating wartime persecution, including FBI raids on Japanese households and the arrest of community leaders like Hatsue's father. The war scattered everyone: the Imada family was transported to Manzanar, while Ishmael shipped out to a brutal amphibious assault that cost him his arm. After the war, Kabuo's attempt to reclaim the seven acres from Etta Heine was flatly refused, and Etta's sale of the farm to a third party set the stage for renewed conflict when Carl repurchased the land. Inside the courtroom, the prosecution assembled its case through rope evidence, a confiscated gaff, expert testimony on Kabuo's combat training, and closing arguments that framed him as a calculated killer. The truth only emerged when Ishmael and the sheriff searched Heine's stored boat and found physical proof that Carl fell from the mast during the freighter's passage.

The emotional spine of the novel traces a series of personal turning points, beginning with Ishmael and Hatsue's secret adolescent romance and ending with Ishmael's hard-won decision to sacrifice his lingering obsession for the sake of justice. Pearl Harbor shattered the island's fragile peace, and the subsequent deportation of Japanese families forced Hatsue to end her hidden relationship with Ishmael permanently, a rupture sealed when Fujiko intercepted his letters at Manzanar. Kabuo's courteous arrival at the camp won Fujiko's approval and led to his marriage with Hatsue, while Ishmael came home from the war wounded in body and bitterness. Years later, Ishmael's drive through the blizzard with Hatsue and her father forced a confrontation with his unresolved feelings, and his mother's quiet insistence that he honor his father's legacy pushed him toward conscience. Rereading Hatsue's old letter and revisiting the cedar tree finally freed Ishmael to share the Coast Guard report with her family. It was Hatsue's sharp memory of a detail from Kabuo's testimony about a kerosene lantern that provided the final piece of evidence, proving once and for all that Carl Heine's death was a tragic accident.
