Before Angel's story begins, the women of Adam's Rib carry their own histories of abandonment and survival, beginning with Bush's grief when baby Angel was taken away and Loretta Wing's arrival that shattered Bush's marriage. On Fur Island, Angel pieces together her identity through photographs and the stories the grandmothers share, while small acts like Dora-Rouge's sleeping potion and a parting gift of a frog in amber quietly bind Angel to her people. The canoe journey north is rich with its own secondary dramas, from Dora-Rouge's story of escaping white school agents to the harrowing crossing of the Se Nay River and the unsettling discovery that Agnes's body cannot be found. At the Fat-Eaters' land, the colonial assault escalates through the arrival of electricity, police violence against Angel personally, and her daring raid on soldiers' food stores. The pool closes with the most intimate grief of the novel, as Angel witnesses Dora-Rouge's chosen death in the ferns of spring.

Dam building finally ceases after more than a year, and Angel's people feel one fracture in the world has been mended.

Angel's transformation depends not just on where she travels but on what she learns about herself and her family along the way. At Adam's Rib and Fur Island, a series of small but charged moments — a mistaken identity, an unexpected gift, a new perception of water — gradually open Angel to her Native heritage and her own emerging powers. The truths Bush shares about Hannah are among the most painful revelations Angel receives, each one reframing her scars and her sense of self. On the canoe journey, Agnes's illness and death force Angel to confront the limits of her healing gifts and the cost of nature's unpredictability. At Hannah's deathbed, Angel finally learns the full truth of her disfigurement and discovers a capacity for forgiveness she did not know she possessed. The pool closes with the hard-won peace that follows the dam campaign, when Angel's people believe that, despite immense loss, one fracture in the world has been mended.

The discoveries and emotional breakthroughs that reshape Angel's understanding of herself.
