This pool traces the quieter but significant moments surrounding the Spanish conquest of the Mexica. It begins with small but meaningful acts of connection — Huitzitzilin offering Benito her translated name — and Father Anselmo's order to document Mexica culture, which sets the formal record-keeping in motion. The pool then follows the cultural and physical violence of the occupation: the desecration of temples, the sexual harassment of Mexica women, and Tetla's public execution. Smallpox ravages the Mexica population, and Huitzitzilin's grief drives her to permanently blind herself in one eye. The post-conquest world is captured through her rebuilding efforts, Cuauhtémoc's execution, and her eventual journey to Spain, where she witnesses Cortés's humiliation at court. The pool closes with Benito discovering Huitzitzilin's death and hearing the soft sound of humming rise from the earth.

Father Anselmo's rigid insistence on colonial ideology contrasts sharply with Benito's growing doubt, which deepens when Huitzitzilin reveals that Baltazar killed Moctezuma and that Cortés falsified his own historical records. The pool then follows the post-conquest revelations: Huitzitzilin's shameful pregnancy, her son's death galvanizing her revenge plot, and a servant's role in bringing Baltazar to his end. Benito's crisis of faith reaches its peak as he chooses mercy over doctrine, and the pool closes with his poignant encounter with Huitzitzilin's assimilated daughter and his final understanding of what Huitzitzilin truly sought from him.
