Starlight is a novel in the
Warriors: The New Prophecy series, set in a world where feral cats live in organized Clans governed by a warrior code. Each Clan is led by a leader who receives nine lives from StarClan, the spirits of their warrior ancestors, and is supported by a deputy, warriors, apprentices, medicine cats who serve as healers and spiritual intermediaries, and elders. In this installment, the four Clans, ThunderClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, and WindClan, have completed a grueling journey to find new territory around a lake.
The story opens in the spirit world, where StarClan warriors gather at a moonlit hollow. Yellowfang, a former ShadowClan medicine cat, gazes into a pool and delivers a prophecy: "Before there is peace, blood will spill blood, and the lake will run red" (5). The water turns scarlet.
The Clans arrive at the lake exhausted. They camp temporarily near a horseplace, a paddock where humans keep horses. Tallstar, the elderly WindClan leader, is too weak to lead, so his deputy Mudclaw speaks aggressively on WindClan's behalf. Onewhisker, a brown tabby WindClan warrior, challenges Mudclaw's disrespect, and Firestar, the ThunderClan leader, intervenes. Firestar holds a warrior ceremony for his daughter Squirrelpaw, naming her Squirrelflight, the first ceremony in the new territory.
The leaders send an exploration patrol around the lake: Brambleclaw of ThunderClan, Crowfeather of WindClan, Tawnypelt of ShadowClan (Brambleclaw's sister), Mistyfoot of RiverClan, and Squirrelflight. Over two days, they identify territory suited to each Clan, including a disused stone quarry that Squirrelflight discovers for ThunderClan. Meanwhile, Leafpaw, Squirrelflight's sister and apprentice to the medicine cat Cinderpelt, stays behind. She and the other medicine cats discuss the urgent need for a replacement for the Moonstone, where leaders once received their nine lives. Mothwing, the young RiverClan medicine cat, swims to a wooded island and finds it ideal for Gatherings, the regular assemblies of all four Clans, but the others dismiss the idea since only RiverClan cats can swim there.
Brambleclaw reports the patrol's findings. Afterward, Hawkfrost, a powerful RiverClan warrior and Brambleclaw's half-brother through their father Tigerstar, a legendary traitor, approaches with friendly words. Squirrelflight confronts Brambleclaw, citing Leafpaw's unease and Hawkfrost's open challenges to Mistyfoot's authority. Their argument deepens when Brambleclaw accuses her of judging Hawkfrost because of Tigerstar, leaving Brambleclaw wondering whether Squirrelflight distrusts him for the same reason.
Before dawn, Tallstar dies. In his final moments, with Firestar, Brambleclaw, and a horrified Onewhisker present, he declares Mudclaw unfit and names Onewhisker as his successor, but he falters without completing the traditional ceremony. The WindClan medicine cat Barkface arrives just after Tallstar's last words. Brambleclaw notices the irregularity, but Firestar, whose own deputy appointment under Bluestar was similarly irregular, stays silent. When Firestar announces the succession, Mudclaw is enraged, accusing them of fabricating Tallstar's wishes. Crowfeather publicly supports Onewhisker. Mudclaw backs down but refuses to serve under Onewhisker, who appoints Ashfoot, Crowfeather's mother, as deputy. Without a Moonstone equivalent, Onewhisker cannot receive his nine lives, leaving his authority vulnerable.
The Clans divide the territory and separate. ThunderClan finds the stone quarry and transforms it into a camp. Brambleclaw accidentally crosses ShadowClan's scent markers, provoking a confrontation that Firestar resolves by withdrawing without argument. He assigns Brambleclaw to collect moss, which Brambleclaw interprets as punishment. Leafpaw discovers that water Mothwing collected for elders was contaminated, causing illness, and carries watermint to WindClan to treat the dangerously ill elder Morningflower. Grateful, Onewhisker cedes borderland woodland to ThunderClan. Mudclaw calls him a traitor, and discontent simmers among WindClan warriors. In a dream, Leafpaw sees the lake fill with blood and hears the same prophecy from the prologue.
Frustrated by his stalled ambitions, Brambleclaw wants to be deputy, but Firestar refuses to replace Graystripe, his captured deputy whom he believes still alive. Squirrelflight spends time with Ashfur, a ThunderClan warrior, deepening Brambleclaw's isolation. In a dream, Brambleclaw visits the old ThunderClan camp, where Tigerstar appears with Hawkfrost and tells both sons to guard their territories fiercely. At the first Gathering, Hawkfrost privately confirms details from the dream, proving it was shared and real. He suggests Brambleclaw deserves to be deputy, implying Firestar's reluctance stems from distrust of Tigerstar's bloodline. Squirrelflight confronts Brambleclaw again and tells him their relationship is over. She walks away, and Brambleclaw is devastated.
After the Gathering, Mothwing privately tells Leafpaw she does not believe in StarClan, dismissing warrior ancestors as mere stories. Leafpaw is horrified, wondering whether Mothwing's lack of faith explains StarClan's silence.
Days later, Spottedleaf, a former ThunderClan medicine cat, appears to Leafpaw in a dream and guides her along a starlit stream. Leafpaw wakes and follows the stream into the hills with her Clanmate Sorreltail. They discover a hollow where water bubbles from a cleft into a pool, ancient pawprints spiraling down to the water. Leafpaw descends, touches the pool, and sees ranks of StarClan warriors appear around her. Bluestar, a former ThunderClan leader, declares this the Moonpool, where medicine cats will commune with StarClan in dreams and leaders will receive their nine lives. Feathertail, a RiverClan cat who died saving Crowfeather in the mountains, appears and asks Leafpaw to tell Crowfeather not to grieve and to remain open to the living. Leafpaw notices Graystripe is absent from StarClan, suggesting he may still be alive.
Leafpaw spreads word of the Moonpool to all Clans. When she delivers Feathertail's message, Crowfeather reacts with grief and defiance. At the half-moon, the medicine cats travel to the Moonpool together. After they commune with StarClan, Cinderpelt performs a naming ceremony, giving Leafpaw her full medicine cat name: Leafpool.
The crisis arrives when Mistyfoot, the RiverClan deputy, races to ThunderClan with urgent news: Hawkfrost has been secretly meeting Mudclaw and has led loyal warriors into ShadowClan territory. She believes they plan to overthrow Onewhisker before he receives his nine lives. Leafpool tells the Clan about her recurring blood prophecy, and Firestar mobilizes ThunderClan. His patrol reaches WindClan just as cats from RiverClan and ShadowClan attack. Firestar fights Mudclaw and is wounded. Squirrelflight's patrol arrives as reinforcements and saves him. Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight fight together with seamless coordination before the melee separates them.
A violent thunderstorm breaks over the battlefield. Mudclaw and Hawkfrost flee, and Brambleclaw pursues. At the ThunderClan camp, warriors fleeing the battle barrel into Leafpool at the cliff edge. Crowfeather finds her clinging to the rock and, overcoming his memory of Feathertail's fatal fall, hauls her to safety. He confesses he loves her. Leafpool realizes she loves him too but knows she cannot act on her feelings as a medicine cat.
In the marshland, Mudclaw pins Brambleclaw and prepares to kill him, but Hawkfrost intervenes and saves his half-brother, claiming he joined Mudclaw out of genuine belief but could not let Brambleclaw die. Mudclaw accuses Hawkfrost of scheming to become WindClan's deputy and later seize RiverClan. Mudclaw breaks free and flees to the lakeshore. Lightning strikes a massive tree on the island, and it topples onto Mudclaw, killing him. The fallen tree lands across the water, forming a natural bridge.
Ashfoot declares the lightning a sign that StarClan has chosen Onewhisker. Onewhisker forgives all who supported Mudclaw. Brackenfur, a ThunderClan warrior, realizes the fallen tree allows all Clans to reach the island for Gatherings. Squirrelflight sees Brambleclaw speaking with Hawkfrost after the battle and turns away without a word. Brambleclaw watches her disappear and sets out for home alone, knowing their relationship is over.
