Stella by Starlight opens with eleven-year-old Stella witnessing a Ku Klux Klan cross-burning near her home in segregated Bumblebee, North Carolina, setting off a chain of events that tests her entire community. Inspired by a traveling salesman's visit and encouraged by his pastor, Stella's father joins two neighbors in successfully registering to vote despite a hostile registrar's obstruction. The Klan retaliates by burning down the Spencer family's home, and Stella risks her own safety to rescue a missing child from the chaos. On Election Day, the whole neighborhood marches together to the polls, and their united presence compels the local sheriff to step aside and let the men vote. Joy turns to fear again when Tony Hawkins is viciously attacked and Mama nearly dies from a snakebite after the white doctor in town refuses to treat her. The story reaches its climax at the pond where it began, when Stella dives into freezing water to save her enemy's daughter and ultimately chooses a path of quiet courage over public accusation.

The school Christmas pageant goes hilariously off-script as the whole community watches, laughs, and celebrates together.

While the main plot centers on voting rights and Klan violence, Stella's story is equally shaped by smaller but meaningful events that reveal her world in full. Her struggles at school, from Christmas pageant rehearsals to a disappointing contest result, show a girl reaching for something she cannot yet name. The community around her provides warmth and resilience, gathered around a potluck supper one evening and around a bucket brigade the next, refusing to be defined only by fear. Stella's relationships with Mama and Tony ground her, from a quiet nighttime conversation about her writing to an ordinary errand into town that turns dangerous. Donated goods flowing to the Spencer family and two nervous churchwomen showing up at the Mills door capture how even small acts of kinship work against hatred. The story closes with the community laughing together at a chaotic school pageant, a moment of healing that shows life continuing and strengthening in spite of everything.

Stella's growth across the novel is driven not just by dramatic events but by smaller revelations and choices that shift how she sees herself and her world. From the moment Mama quietly names Dr. Packard as a likely Klansman, Stella carries a secret knowledge that quietly builds into certainty over the course of the story. Her battle with writing moves from failure and frustration toward genuine pride, as she learns to put her own truth onto the page one difficult word at a time. She watches adults around her wrestle with fear and injustice too, learning that even her father carries old wounds from a country that rejected him. Each act of helping others, from running for Tony's sake to applying first aid to Mama's bite, deepens her understanding of her own courage. By the final pages, Stella has moved from a girl who whispered a name she was afraid to say aloud to one who chooses her battles wisely and writes a sentence good enough to post on her own wall.
