Brown introduces the S( )R formula representing the space between stimulus and response as the location of human freedom and choice.

Strong Ground opens with Brené Brown's back injury and her work with trainer Tony, whose instruction to find the ground becomes the book's central metaphor for building stability before adding new capabilities. Brown translates this physical lesson into her core thesis: technology and change initiatives layered onto dysfunctional systems amplify problems rather than solving them. She then builds her argument chapter by chapter, introducing paradoxical thinking, the concept of negative capability, and her updated Dare to Lead research showing that the armor deployed against fear—not fear itself—is the true barrier to courage. Each chapter adds a new dimension to her framework, from the requirements for genuine organizational transformation to the Five Cs for mission clarity and Amy Webb's strategies for navigating technological disruption. The book culminates in Brown's comprehensive model of grounded confidence and her personal account of expanding the space between stimulus and response, offering a complete pathway from dysfunction to authentic, sustainable strength.

The headline events driving Brown's framework for grounded leadership.

Musician Carrie Rodriguez reveals that what feels cheesy during songwriting often signals authentic vulnerability and genuinely honest expression.

Carl Jung's framework is introduced, framing paradox not as a problem to solve but as essential for comprehending the fullness of life.

Franciscan friar Richard Rohr's grace paradox teaches Brown that people experience more spiritual growth through mistakes than through doing things right.

Adam Grant identifies three unproductive mindsets—preacher, prosecutor, and politician—as patterns that prioritize conviction over truth.

Grant's research shows Italian startup founders who treated strategies as hypotheses generated over forty times more revenue than the control group.

Brown introduces the BRAVING acronym, identifying seven elements—Boundaries, Reliability, Accountability, Vault, Integrity, Non-judgment, and Generosity—that build trust.

Brown warns organizations against performative breaking—reckless dismantling driven by ego and power displays rather than disciplined strategic intent.

Futurist Amy Webb introduces steering into the slide as a framework for making continuous micro-adjustments during rapid technological disruption.

Harvard scholar Sarah Lewis distinguishes labor from work and reframes setbacks as trials and reinventions rather than static, judgmental failures.

Dan Pink identifies symphonic thinking—synthesizing diverse ideas and recognizing cross-field patterns—as the cornerstone aptitude of the Conceptual Age.

Abby Wambach accepts a reserve role during the 2015 Women's World Cup and reframes being benched as a distinct leadership opportunity.

Brown notices cognitive haziness and diminished creativity after intensive AI language model use, recognizing the experience as extractive.

While the main plot of Strong Ground establishes Brown's core framework, a rich second layer of events introduces the expert voices and research findings that give the argument its depth and credibility. Tony's specific diagnosis of Brown's compensatory muscle patterns sets the physical foundation, while a grief dancer's performance and musician Carrie Rodriguez's insight about vulnerability bridge the worlds of art and leadership. Carl Jung's framing of paradox and Richard Rohr's grace paradox deepen the philosophical case for holding tension, and Adam Grant's research on rethinking and Italian startup founders provides empirical weight. Later chapters bring in futurist Amy Webb's steering into the slide metaphor, Sarah Lewis's reframing of failure as labor, and Dan Pink's symphonic thinking to show that conceptual breadth is the defining skill of the modern era. The pool closes with Abby Wambach's decision to lead from the bench and Brown's personal reckoning with AI's extractive effects on her own creativity.
