The U.S. Supreme Court rules that Arkansas's antievolution law violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment.

The book traces the rise of American antievolution sentiment, culminating in Tennessee's Butler Act making it a misdemeanor to teach human evolution in public schools. The ACLU saw this law as an opportunity for a constitutional test case and recruited John Scopes, a Dayton high school science instructor, as the nominal defendant. The trial became a national spectacle when William Jennings Bryan joined the prosecution and Clarence Darrow led the defense, transforming a local criminal case into a clash over science, religion, and democratic majority rule. The prosecution won a swift legal victory, but Darrow scored a dramatic moral triumph by forcing Bryan to concede on the witness stand that the Bible requires interpretation. Bryan died days after the trial, and an appeal left the Butler Act standing while overturning Scopes's conviction on a technicality. Decades later, the U.S. Supreme Court resolved the broader constitutional question by striking down a similar antievolution law as a violation of the First Amendment.

Frederick Lewis Allen publishes 'Only Yesterday,' portraying the Scopes trial as a decisive triumph of science and reason over religion.

Long before the Scopes trial, early evolutionary theories by Lamarck and fossil discoveries like the Piltdown skull inflamed tensions between science and religion in America. Mandatory school attendance laws expanded the reach of Darwinian textbooks into millions of new households, fueling fundamentalist alarm. When the ACLU sought a test case, Dayton's community architects quietly assembled the case, recruiting prosecutors and securing Scopes, while both sides spent weeks preparing competing strategies. Inside the courtroom, procedural skirmishes over prayer, jury composition, and the admissibility of expert testimony shaped the trial's outcome as much as the arguments themselves. Bryan and Malone each delivered defining speeches on whether science could speak in the courtroom, and the aftermath was marred by missed legal deadlines and internal conflicts that hampered the appeal. The trial's popular legacy was ultimately cemented not by court documents but by Frederick Lewis Allen's influential book, which cast science as the clear victor and religion as the defeated relic.

Gary Scott's federal court challenge to Tennessee's antievolution law prompts the state Senate to repeal the Butler Act entirely.

The antievolution movement gained its sharpest political edge when Darwinian natural selection became linked to eugenics, giving fundamentalists a vivid moral argument against teaching evolution in public schools. Bryan's legislative campaign moved from Florida to Tennessee, where the Butler bill's surprisingly contentious Senate passage signaled a new national flashpoint. Before the trial began, crucial behind-the-scenes decisions shaped both sides' strategies: Bryan failed to secure credible scientific witnesses while the defense publicly assembled a roster of respected scientists to demonstrate how broadly evolution was accepted. Inside the courtroom, procedural surprises repeatedly upended expectations, from the defense's dramatic gambit of calling Bryan as a witness to Darrow's unprecedented request that the jury convict his own client to force an appeal. After both sides claimed victory, the case wound through appeals and faded as antievolution laws became politically untenable, but fundamentalism itself never disappeared. The production of 'Inherit the Wind' and subsequent legal challenges — including the repeal of the Butler Act — showed that the questions raised at Dayton continued to reshape American law, education, and culture for decades.

The key decisions, surprises, and pivotal shifts that drove the Scopes Trial and its lasting legacy.
