The collection spans three eras and many characters, but these events represent the most pivotal turning points in each story. In early Soviet Russia and New York, Pushkin's accidental visa application sets a transatlantic journey in motion, ending with the couple penniless and separated at a New York train station. In turn-of-the-millennium New York, forger Timothy Touchett is betrayed by his mentor Pennybrook, stranded traveler Jerry discovers his jolly companion Smitty is a struggling alcoholic, and Nell uncovers her stepfather John's secret passion for roller-skating. Tommy weaponizes Carnegie Hall's rules against the grieving Mr. Fein, while Skinner's scheme to profit from a family heirloom painting is cut short by a more ruthless opportunist. In 1930s Hollywood, Eve Ross uses her wits and Rohypnol to rescue actress Olivia from a studio-enforced date, and she ultimately frames the corrupt hotel security chief Finnegan to recover blackmail photos threatening many actresses.

The headline moments of every story in the collection.

Pushkin begins holding places in Moscow's ration lines for others, accepting food portions as payment.

Skinner takes Lucas to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to teach him about art preservation and collectors.

Eve meets former homicide detective Charlie on the train to Los Angeles and discusses Rohypnol's effects.

Marcus receives the recovered photos and realizes Eve has carefully cropped out all nudity to protect the actresses.

The secondary events of the collection reveal the texture and motivation behind each story's central conflicts. Pushkin's good-natured line-waiting begins as simple community service before quietly becoming a business, and his life in New York mirrors his Soviet experience as he joins a church soup kitchen line. Timothy's forgery career grows through small, tempting steps—starting with John Dos Passos for fifty dollars—before his ambition drives him to master Russian for a Tolstoy inscription. In 'Hasta Luego,' Jerry pays a thousand dollars for Smitty's generosity at the hotel bar and then sacrifices his own flight to accompany Smitty to his gate, while 'I Will Survive' pivots on Peggy's initial suspicion and John's private confession to Jeremy about skating's hold on his identity. In 'The Bootlegger,' Tommy's obsessive hunt leads him to Mr. Fein's building, where a surprisingly gracious conversation deepens Tommy's guilt rather than relieving it. The collection ends with Eve and Charlie meeting on a train to Los Angeles, and with Marcus quietly discovering that Eve, unlike any male investigator, destroyed the nude portions of the recovered photos to protect the actresses.

Finnegan succumbs to the Rohypnol Eve secretly coated his glass with, just as he is about to shoot them both.

The turning points of the collection hinge on decisions and discoveries that surprise both the characters and the reader. Irina's ideological conviction transforms Pushkin's accidental visa into a transatlantic adventure, but Pushkin immediately undermines their finances by giving away all their travel money to porters. Timothy's greed crystallizes when he negotiates a profit-sharing deal with Pennybrook, and a detective's personal ancestry turns what should be a minor forgery case into a serious arrest. In 'Hasta Luego' and 'I Will Survive,' seemingly small acts—taking a man's shoes, defying advice to stay home—cascade into revelations about marriage and empathy, with Jeremy finally understanding that Peggy felt excluded from the greatest source of John's happiness. 'The Bootlegger' pivots on three consecutive revelations: Tommy's guilt-driven obsession, Meredith's unforgettable curse, and Mary's quiet disclosure that she kept and cherishes Mr. Fein's final recording. The novella's turning points are defined by Eve's superior instincts: Prentice's identification of the Hacienda bathroom, Eve's bold gamble of waiting alone in Finnegan's house, and the Rohypnol she coats his glass with that finally brings him down.
