Tell Me Everything follows Bob Burgess, a semi-retired lawyer in Crosby, Maine, whose life is transformed by two intertwined events: his deepening friendship with writer Lucy Barton and his decision to defend Matt Beach, suspected of murdering his mother Gloria. When Gloria's body is recovered from a submerged car at a quarry, Diana Beach asks Bob to represent her brother, pulling him into the troubled Beach family's painful history. As Bob grows closer to Matt and Lucy, he also confronts the state of his marriage to minister Margaret Estaver. The crisis arrives when Bob spots Diana at an airport and races to Matt's house, where he finds she has died by suicide just as police were closing in to arrest her for Gloria's murder. Matt then reveals the family's buried trauma, and Gloria's journals expose the self-loathing behind her cruelty. By the novel's end, the mystery is resolved and Bob's relationships—with Margaret, Lucy, and the wider world—have been quietly but permanently reshaped.

Bob flies to New York and confronts Larry, urging him to have compassion for Jim before it is too late.

Behind the main plot, a web of secondary relationships carries much of Tell Me Everything's emotional weight. Bob's ex-wife Pam arrives in Maine to reveal her alcohol use disorder and to share the news that Jim's wife Helen is dying, setting off a chain of events involving family loyalty and long-deferred accountability. Bob's friendship with Lucy deepens as they process Jim's history together, while Jim and his son Larry remain locked in painful estrangement through Helen's death and beyond. The novel also follows Pam's relapse, Larry's accident and coma, and Bob's journey to confront Larry about forgiving Jim, as well as Bob's private admission to Jim that he is in love with Lucy. By the novel's close, the quiet dissolution of Lucy's friendship with Charlene and Bob's glimpse of a happier Matt through his office window signal that life in Crosby has shifted for everyone, in ways both large and small.

From Olive's first story about ghosts in a marriage to her quiet recognition that Bob and Lucy are in love, the novel builds toward a series of discoveries about self-deception, vulnerability, and the stories people tell themselves. Jim's inexplicable withdrawal, Lucy's identification of Bob as a sin-eater, and Olive's crisis over losing Isabelle all mark pivotal moments of hard-won self-understanding. Bob and Margaret's confrontation over gaslighting and the tense compromise over Matt's rifle represent significant shifts in how characters see themselves and each other. Ultimately, Bob and Lucy's first real argument and their three-week silence dissolve the romantic tension at the novel's heart, and Lucy's final gift to Olive—the story of her nonexistent love affair with Bob—closes the book on a note of quiet acceptance, affirming that love arrives in more forms than anyone expects.
