Part I builds the foundational concepts. For sequential games, the authors establish Rule 1: Look forward and reason backward. Game trees, visual diagrams mapping possible moves and outcomes, are the primary analytical tool. A Survivor: Thailand flag-removal game shows how working backward from the final move reveals the winning first move. The authors also demonstrate that having more options can hurt a player: If a president gains line-item veto power, the ability to strike individual budget items rather than accepting or rejecting an entire bill, Congress will adjust what it passes, potentially leaving both sides worse off. This previews a recurring theme: Restricting one's own choices can be strategically advantageous.

For simultaneous games, the authors use a pricing competition between two catalog merchants, Rainbow's End and B. B. Lean, to illustrate the prisoners' dilemma. Each firm has a dominant strategy, a single best action regardless of the rival's choice, to cut prices. Rule 2 states: If you have a dominant strategy, use it. Yet when both firms cut prices, both earn less than if they had cooperated. The authors trace the dilemma to a 1950 seminar by mathematician Al Tucker and examine strategies for resolving it, notably tit for tat, cooperating initially and then mirroring the rival's last move, which won political scientist Robert Axelrod's computer tournaments. They argue that tit for tat is flawed because any mistake triggers endless retaliation. Successful cooperation requires quick detection of cheating, clear rules, graduated penalties, and stable relationships. Meet-the-competition clauses, in which a firm promises to match any rival's lower price, appear pro-consumer but actually facilitate collusion. The tragedy of the commons, in which shared resources are overexploited because no individual bears the full cost, is presented as a multiperson prisoners' dilemma.

Nash equilibrium, named for mathematician John Nash, provides a general solution for simultaneous games: a set of strategies in which each player's choice is the best response to the others', so no one benefits from deviating. The authors find equilibria by identifying mutual best responses or by successively eliminating dominated strategies, choices that are inferior regardless of what opponents do (Rules 3 and 4). When multiple equilibria exist, game theorist Thomas Schelling's concept of a focal point helps: Culturally or contextually obvious solutions guide coordination, such as meeting at noon at the Empire State Building or splitting a surplus 50:50.

Part II addresses advanced tools. When any systematic choice can be exploited, as in a soccer penalty kick, the solution is to randomize. Using professional soccer data, the authors find striking agreement between theoretical and actual mixing proportions. Rule 5 prescribes randomizing in proportions that equalize the opponent's payoffs across available options.

The authors then introduce strategic moves, actions taken before a game to alter its structure. Commitments are unconditional first moves; threats punish undesired actions; promises reward desired ones. Credibility is the central challenge. Devices for establishing it fall under three principles: change payoffs so that following through becomes advantageous, through contracts or reputation; limit the ability to back out, by burning bridges (as when Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés disabled his ships in Mexico) or leaving outcomes to chance; and use others, through teamwork or negotiating agents who lack authority to compromise. Brinkmanship, the deliberate creation of a risk of mutual disaster, makes threats credible when an outright ultimatum would not be believed. The Cuban missile crisis is the central example: The escalating risk of nuclear war, desired by neither side, ultimately compelled Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to yield. The authors stress that brinkmanship is inherently dangerous, as the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre illustrates.

Part III applies these principles to specific domains. In games of asymmetric information, signaling involves taking costly actions that reveal favorable private information: A car warranty is cheap for the seller of a good car but expensive for the seller of a lemon, making it credible. Screening involves designing choices that force revelation: Airlines price first-class and economy options so that business travelers and tourists self-select. Signal jamming involves mimicking actions to conceal unfavorable information.

The chapter on cooperation and coordination examines situations distinct from the prisoners' dilemma. Bandwagon effects explain why inferior standards such as the QWERTY keyboard persist: Once enough users adopt a standard, no individual can profitably switch. Tipping dynamics explain racial segregation: Even when most residents prefer integration, small shifts in a neighborhood's racial composition can trigger self-reinforcing moves toward homogeneity. The Chicago suburb of Oak Park successfully countered tipping by banning "For Sale" signs and offering property-value insurance.

The auction chapter explains four formats and derives optimal bidding strategies. In a Vickrey auction, a sealed-bid format in which the winner pays only the second-highest bid, bidding one's true valuation is a dominant strategy. The revenue equivalence theorem, first proved by Nobel laureate Roger Myerson, shows that when each bidder's valuation depends solely on personal preferences, all standard formats generate the same expected revenue. The key to avoiding the winner's curse, the tendency to overpay, is to condition one's bid on the assumption that all rival bids are lower.

The bargaining chapter models negotiation through alternating offers and backward reasoning, showing that the surplus division converges toward 50:50 when the time between offers is short. Each side's share depends on its BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement). The authors propose the virtual strike: Workers keep working and firms keep producing, but neither side receives payment during the dispute, replicating financial incentives without harming consumers.

The voting chapter demonstrates that no system perfectly aggregates preferences, per economist Kenneth Arrow's impossibility theorem. Condorcet's paradox shows that pairwise majority voting among three or more candidates can cycle without producing a winner. Research by the economist Caplin and coauthor Nalebuff shows that a candidate at the center of the voter distribution can guarantee at least 36 percent support, providing theoretical grounding for the two-thirds supermajority requirement in the U.S. Constitution.

The incentives chapter addresses moral hazard, the problem arising when effort cannot be directly observed. Optimal contracts balance fixed payments with performance bonuses, trading incentive strength against risk. Efficiency wages, pay above the market rate, give workers something to lose if caught shirking. When workers perform multiple tasks, incentive design must account for whether tasks are complements, reinforcing each other, or substitutes, competing for effort.

The book concludes with case studies applying these principles to situations ranging from corporate takeovers and auction-like contests to inheritance design and slot machine economics, reinforcing the premise that game-theoretic thinking sharpens decision making across diverse domains.
