Doris's story is driven as much by inner shifts as outward events, beginning with Hubert's rejection and her slap — a moment that closes one chapter of her heart. She acts impulsively, refusing to give back the stolen ermine coat and losing all feeling for Hubert the moment he appears diminished. In Berlin, she finds small ways to outsmart men — deflecting the Red Moon and stealing his wife's shirts — while her attraction to the Onyx's friend undoes her calculated plans. Her brief affair with Brenner and his final words reveal Berlin's darker side to her for the first time. Left alone, Doris arrives at the novel's most honest moment: a quiet reckoning with three bleak paths and the admission that glamour may not be worth it after all.
