The story begins in medieval Russia, where the boyar Pyotr's wife Marina dies giving birth to their youngest daughter Vasya, a girl with the rare ability to see the household and nature spirits others cannot. Pyotr's second marriage to the pious Anna and the arrival of the ambitious priest Father Konstantin cause the villagers to abandon their offerings to the protective spirits, leaving the village dangerously exposed. As Vasya grows up, her father tries to secure her future through an arranged marriage, but it collapses in humiliation, and the supernatural threat of the imprisoned demon Medved grows ever stronger. After Vasya's beloved nursemaid Dunya dies and her stepmother gives her an impossible ultimatum, Vasya flees into the forest, where Morozko rescues her and brings her to his enchanted home to recover. Konstantin betrays Anna by delivering her to Medved as a sacrifice, which frees the demon and forces a desperate final battle at the ancient oak tree. Vasya and Morozko manage to imprison Medved once more, but at the cost of Pyotr's life, and Vasya ultimately chooses to leave the village to forge her own path.

The central story of Vasya's battle to save her village from Medved.

Sasha visits the Trinity Lavra monastery, meets the holy man Sergei Radonezhsky, and resolves to become a monk.

Metropolitan Aleksei arranges Anna Ivanovna's marriage to Pyotr Vladimirovich to remove her troubling presence from Moscow.

A drunken Kolya confronts the mysterious stranger Morozko, who effortlessly disarms him and leaves five frostbite marks on his neck.

Morozko spares Kolya's life in exchange for Pyotr's promise to give Vasya a sapphire necklace and never speak of their meeting.

Olga marries Prince Vladimir of Serpukhov and departs Lesnaya Zemlya, with Sasha accompanying her to join his monastery.

Anna catches Vasya speaking to the domovoi, the house spirit, and screams at her in terror, driving the girl from the house.

The vazila, the spirit of horses, teaches Vasya to communicate with horses and to ride bareback through the stable.

A village child dies and wolves close in; Vasya enters the forest alone and makes an offering to Morozko to stop the killing cold.

A rusalka lures Father Konstantin toward a lake to drown him, and Vasya intervenes against the water spirit's wishes to save him.

The rusalka warns Vasya that the Bear is stirring and the protective wards surrounding Lesnaya Zemlya are failing.

Vasya steals Kyril's horse Ogon and rides bareback through the forest to rescue her nephew Seryozha from a runaway mare.

The servant girl Agafya dies and rises as an upyr; Vasya and Alyosha track her down and stake her in her grave.

A young monk named Rodion arrives with Sasha's message about a brewing rebellion against the Tatars, which Pyotr refuses to join.

Dunya rises from death as an upyr and attacks the stable horses, killing a young colt before retreating into the forest.

Vasya confronts Father Konstantin after the battle and threatens him with Morozko's power, forcing the priest to leave the village forever.

While the main conflict builds, the world around Vasya is quietly being shaped by forces she cannot fully control. Her brother Sasha departs for a monastery, her sister Olga is married off to a prince, and Morozko's confrontation with Kolya sets in motion the chain of events surrounding the protective necklace. Vasya forges vital bonds with the household and nature spirits, learning to ride bareback and quietly sustaining the chyerti that the villagers increasingly neglect under Konstantin's influence. Warning signs accumulate as the rusalka alerts Vasya to Medved's stirring and a disastrous betrothal ends in public humiliation and violence. As the supernatural danger escalates, the dead begin to walk and Vasya is forced into increasingly desperate acts of protection, from staking a risen servant girl to watching her beloved nurse return as a creature of the night. The crisis culminates in the battle at the oak tree and its aftermath, with Vasya driving the corrupt priest from the village and preparing to leave the only home she has ever known.

The secondary forces and relationships that shape Vasya's world.

Marina Ivanovna reveals her magical lineage from the Grand Prince's wife and insists her unborn daughter will inherit those ancient gifts.

Vasya describes the one-eyed man and the mysterious rider to her brother Sasha, who uses the incident to argue that their father should remarry.

Anna Ivanovna arrives in Lesnaya Zemlya and discovers that unlike in Moscow, the household spirits there actively and intently watch her.

Metropolitan Aleksei sends the charismatic priest Konstantin to remote Lesnaya Zemlya to exile him from Moscow's political sphere.

Morozko visits Dunya's dreams again, demanding she give Vasya the protective necklace; Dunya pleads for one more year to prepare the girl.

Father Konstantin accidentally paints Vasya's green-eyed likeness into an icon meant to depict the Virgin Mary.

The bathhouse spirit gives Vasya a cryptic prophecy: she will pluck midwinter snowdrops, die by her own choosing, and weep for a nightingale.

Alone in the church, Father Konstantin hears a mysterious voice that claims to be God and promises him power and glory.

During a church sermon, Medved possesses Father Konstantin's icon of the risen Christ, transforming it into a grinning, one-eyed figure.

Medved slips into the Vladimirovich house like smoke in the night, and Morozko appears and drives him away from the family.

Medved reveals his true identity to Konstantin and offers to spare the priest if he delivers another witch in Vasya's place.

Morozko reveals to Vasya that he is Death and his brother Medved is Fear, explaining their ancient rivalry and Medved's destructive purpose.

Vasya offers her blood to awaken Dunya's upyr spirit, allowing Morozko to lead the old nurse peacefully into true death.

Vasya summons Morozko at her father's grave, and he tells her that Pyotr's sacrifice was freely chosen out of love for his children.

From the very beginning, hidden choices and slow-burning revelations set the story's course, starting with Marina's insistence on bearing a child destined to inherit ancient gifts. As Vasya grows, a series of discoveries gradually expose the true nature of the world she inhabits, from the existence of the protective necklace to the corruption quietly spreading inside Father Konstantin. Konstantin's moral collapse deepens as he mistakes Medved's voice for God's and finds his obsession with Vasya darkening both his soul and his sacred art. The supernatural danger becomes undeniable when Medved begins entering the village itself, forcing Vasya to understand the full stakes of what she is fighting. In the story's final act, the truth about the two immortal brothers is laid bare, and Vasya must draw on every gift at her disposal to bind the Bear and protect what remains of her family. The aftermath brings grief and hard-won clarity, and armed with the truth of her father's sacrifice, Vasya chooses freedom over the confined life her society demands of her.
