A handsome Polish mechanic named Ryszard enters the family's orbit through Cass and Elaine, sparking disasters including the theft of car parts from customers and a blackmail scheme that traps Dickie. While Cass secures her place at Trinity College and PJ endures bullying tied to his father's failures, Dickie spirals under the weight of extortion he cannot escape and a business he never wanted. PJ's vulnerability is mapped through his secret savings, his dangerous voyeurism with Nev, and his nearness to a predator he mistakes for a friend, all while his parents remain too distracted to notice his needs. Imelda's growing emotional attachment to Big Mike mirrors her hunger for connection in a marriage built on grief and convenience, while Dickie's survivalist projects in the woods reveal a man retreating from reality into fantasy. The pool ends with Cass finally choosing her brother over her social ambitions, rescuing PJ from danger and stepping into the role of protector her family needs.

Dickie's joyful but short-lived romance with Willie at Trinity College is shown to have been sacrificed out of misplaced guilt for his role in steering Frank toward the life that killed him. Key betrayals and discoveries then drive the narrative toward its catastrophic conclusion: Ryszard's secret recording, the missing business funds, and Imelda's tearful admission about her wedding veil all strip away the family's last illusions.
