Nuri and his blind wife Afra are Syrian refugees living in a rundown English B&B while their asylum application is decided. Through a series of flashbacks, the story reveals how civil war tore apart their lives in Aleppo — the bomb that killed their son Sami, Mustafa's violent departure, and soldiers forcing the couple to finally flee. Their escape takes them across the Syrian border into Turkey, through Istanbul, and across a terrifying sea crossing to the Greek islands. In Athens they endure brutal camps, and Nuri is drawn into a deadly confrontation with a man exploiting refugee children before a smuggler's betrayal precedes their flight to England. Back in the present, Nuri collapses and is diagnosed with PTSD, and the novel closes when Mustafa finally arrives at the B&B, offering the couple their first real hope.

This pool traces the texture of Nuri and Afra's journey through the people and places surrounding the main events. It begins with the idyllic pre-war life in Aleppo — the beehives, the Saturday family lunches, the ordinary happiness — before the deaths of their sons shattered everything. The route to England takes them through a Turkish camp where strangers offer brief help, and through Istanbul where Mustafa's desperate emails trace his own parallel journey across Europe. On the Greek islands and in Athens, the couple navigate bureaucracy, makeshift camps, and dangerous strangers, including the smuggler who controls their fate. In England, small breakthroughs — Afra laughing with neighbors and watching birds with restored sight — quietly signal the slow return of life.

The people and places that shaped the refugees' path.

This pool focuses on the hidden turning points of the novel — the moments of discovery, confession, and decision that reshape everything. It begins with Nuri's mysterious garden encounters with Mohammed and follows the couple's terrifying passage out of Syria, including Nuri's final look back at his homeland. It traces the symbolic weight of Mohammed's key, the allegorical story of the blind kings, and Afra's haunting divided cityscape painting, alongside Nuri's brutal wounding in the Athens park. The devastating discovery of Afra's rape comes just before the couple board a plane for England, marking the darkest point of their journey. The pool ends with the two most pivotal truths of the novel: the doctor's diagnosis of Afra's psychosomatic blindness, and Afra's confrontation of Nuri with the reality that Mohammed was never real.
