Her visit to the UN with Constantin triggers a vivid vision of all her possible futures withering away as she fails to choose a path. After returning home, Esther makes small, failed attempts at normalcy — trying to write a novel, withdrawing from Cambridge — before her suicidal impulses take over completely. A failed drowning attempt at a beach outing and a tearful visit to her father's grave expose the depth of her despair before she overdoses. Inside the mental health system, Esther encounters fellow patient Joan Gilling, whose own descent into suicidal crisis was directly inspired by reading about Esther's disappearance. The pool closes at Joan's funeral, where Esther listens to her own heartbeat and quietly reaffirms her will to live.

Beneath the surface of Esther's story lie the quiet turning points that chart her emotional transformation, from a symbolic bath signaling her longing for rebirth to a disappointing sanatorium visit that ends any lingering romantic feeling for Buddy. Back home, her depression manifests in dark private moments — imagining violence against her mother, a failed razor attempt, a failed noose fashioned from a bathrobe cord — that reveal how completely she has unraveled. Her mother's inability to grasp the nature of mental illness deepens her isolation, but in the private hospital Esther finds unexpected guides: the lobotomized Valerie, who reflects the cost of submission, and Dr. Nolan, whose successful treatment finally lifts the bell jar and whose prescription for a diaphragm gives Esther a sense of freedom over her own body. Esther loses her virginity to a stranger named Irwin on her own terms, a long-sought act of defiance against the sexual double standard that has haunted her throughout the novel. The pool ends with Buddy's hollow visit to the hospital, where their mutual estrangement becomes undeniable and Esther steps closer to releasing herself from the expectations of her old life.
