Lewis's decision to pull his children from residential school and Mr. Ellis's racist remark about Ruthie's skin establish the world of prejudice the family navigates from the start. As Norma grows up, her recurring dreams and the discovery of family photographs missing her earliest years fuel a slow, mounting suspicion about her origins. Joe and Ben forge a secret pact to search for Ruthie in Boston, while Norma finds brief happiness with Mark before that marriage also unravels. Lenore's confused nighttime wandering and Joe's eventual return to the berry-field cabin both signal that old wounds are cracking open. The pool ends with the family scattering Joe's ashes in Maine, bringing the story to its bittersweet close.

Mr. Ellis's callousness toward the missing Ruthie and the government's withdrawal of school funding reveal the systemic indifference facing the family from the start. Joe's unresolved rage surfaces repeatedly—swerving at Archie, storming into the path of a truck, and punching Charlie's killer's brother years later—while Mae's frank challenge of his self-pity marks the first crack in his long grief. Norma's confrontation with June over her dark complexion, her argument with Mark about having more children, and the shock of learning she was kidnapped each represent moments where she is pushed closer to the truth.
