Minerva Contreras, a graduate student obsessed with horror writer Beatrice Tremblay, gains access to Tremblay's unpublished papers through Carolyn Yates and begins piecing together the mystery of their mutual friend Ginny Somerset's disappearance. In parallel, Alba Quiroga's brother Tadeo vanishes from the family farm in Hidalgo under terrifying circumstances, drawing Alba into the world of folk magic and the teyolloquani. In a third timeline revealed through Tremblay's manuscript, Ginny is pursued by an evil presence at Stoneridge College before vanishing under suspicious circumstances that are never properly investigated. As Minerva digs deeper, she uncovers that Carolyn's family was responsible for Ginny's death and that she herself is being targeted next. Alba and Minerva each arm themselves with inherited folk knowledge to confront the warlocks threatening them, both luring their enemies into feeding on poisoned blood. The three timelines converge as both women destroy their witches using the same ancestral recipe, affirming that the knowledge passed between generations of women is the most powerful force in the novel.

Before the central conflict erupts, both timelines establish the social worlds their protagonists inhabit, from the rigid class hierarchies of rural Hidalgo and Depression-era Stoneridge to the privileged enclave Minerva navigates as a scholarship student in 1998. Alba's instinct for folk magic is present from the start, and the early scenes on her family farm reveal the tensions between tradition and modernity that will define her arc. Ginny's friendship with the working-class Santiago and her roommates' gossip about her make clear that she was targeted long before her disappearance, while Tremblay's observations plant seeds of doubt about the official explanation. Minerva's investigation expands as she traces connections between Thomas, Noah, and Carolyn, gradually realising she is following the same path that led Ginny to her death. Alba's confrontation with the teyolloquani in the forest clearing is a crucial act of courage that precedes her final reckoning with Arturo. The pool ends where Pool 1 does: with Carolyn declared missing and Minerva left alive but watchful, uncertain whether Noah is truly innocent.

A shadowy presence in the factory hurls rusty nails at Carolyn, giving Minerva the chance to grab an axe and decapitate her.

This pool traces the moments of revelation and choice that define the novel's three protagonists and its two antagonists. Alba moves from a young woman torn between folk tradition and urban sophistication to a resolute avenger once Arturo reveals his true nature, while her growing bond with Valentín clarifies what she stands to lose. Ginny's séance is the first sign that something genuinely supernatural is at work, and her worsening isolation is compounded by Edgar's insistence that she is mentally ill rather than bewitched. Minerva's acceptance that she has been targeted is marked by the dead rat in her bed and her decision to carve witch marks, mirroring Ginny's own desperate measures decades earlier. The flower test that exposes Arturo and the green light that attacks Minerva's dorm both crystallise how close each woman is to destruction. The final confrontations hinge on inherited knowledge: Alba's poisoned blood destroys Arturo, and a ghostly presence in the factory gives Minerva the crucial seconds she needs to finish Carolyn. Together these turning points show that folk wisdom, passed between women across generations, is the decisive force in every reckoning.
