Harry Bosch is called to a crime scene where a body has been found inside a drainage pipe near Mulholland Dam.

Bosch recognizes the dead man as Billy Meadows, a fellow tunnel rat from his Vietnam War unit.

Bosch visits the FBI offices and presents his theory that Meadows's murder is connected to an unsolved bank robbery.

The FBI files a complaint against Bosch with Internal Affairs, and his lieutenant orders him off the Meadows case.

The FBI reverses its complaint and reinstates Bosch as a partner with Special Agent Eleanor Wish.

Bosch and Wish interrogate teenage witness Sharkey, who reveals two people dropped Meadows's body from a jeep.

Bosch and Wish visit Charlie Company halfway house and identify Vietnam veterans Franklin and Delgado as prime suspects.

Sharkey is found murdered near the Hollywood Bowl, and Bosch concludes there is an inside man in law enforcement.

Bosch traces a phone number to Nguyen Tran and follows him to a private vault in Beverly Hills.

Agent Rourke organizes a joint FBI and LAPD stakeout of the Beverly Hills vault, positioning a SWAT team outside.

Internal Affairs officers Lewis and Clarke force the vault open against orders, and Franklin and Delgado shoot them both.

Bosch jumps into the underground tunnel network to pursue Franklin and Delgado as they flee the vault.

Rourke enters the tunnel, kills Delgado, and turns his gun on the wounded Bosch.

Wish shoots Rourke from behind at the last possible moment, saving Bosch's life.

Wish confesses that she arranged for Meadows's body to be placed at the dam so Bosch would investigate and expose Rourke.

Detective Harry Bosch is pulled into a murder case when a body is found in a drainage pipe near Mulholland Dam, and his recognition of the victim as a fellow Vietnam War tunnel rat drives him to pursue justice despite institutional resistance. His theory connecting the murder to an unsolved bank robbery puts him at odds with the FBI, who have him temporarily removed from the case, before an uneasy partnership with Agent Eleanor Wish is formed. Together they identify two Vietnam veterans, Franklin and Delgado, as the bank robbers and track a second planned heist to a private Beverly Hills vault, setting up a joint surveillance operation led by Agent Rourke. The operation spirals into chaos when Internal Affairs officers force open the vault against orders and are shot by the robbers, forcing Bosch to pursue the criminals alone through the underground tunnels. Rourke is ultimately revealed as the inside man and is killed by Wish herself, who then confesses to Bosch that she engineered the entire investigation from the start to expose and destroy him.

The headline investigation from Meadows's body to Wish's confession.

Bosch searches Meadows's apartment and discovers a Vietnam War group photo and a pawn ticket for a jade bracelet.

Meadows's autopsy reveals he was tortured with a stun gun and his hand was broken after his death.

Bosch uses a computer at the Robbery-Homicide Division to trace the jade bracelet to the WestLand National Bank robbery.

Director Irving assigns Internal Affairs detectives Lewis and Clarke to secretly investigate Bosch and find grounds to fire him.

Sharkey and his two accomplices lure and rob a gay man they follow home to his house in West Hollywood.

Bosch searches gang-related graffiti records and identifies the witness at the dam as seventeen-year-old Edward Niese, known as Sharkey.

Bosch and Wish find a man soliciting sex from a teenage girl when they search Sharkey's motel room.

Wish arrives unannounced at Bosch's home, and the two bond over his Vietnam experiences and her brother who never came home.

A State Department contact reveals that Binh and Tran were corrupt Saigon police captains who smuggled diamonds into the United States.

A car with square headlights tries to run Bosch and Wish down on the street outside her apartment.

Bosch secretly installs a listening device in Binh's office phone during their interview to monitor his calls.

A military file mailed from St. Louis contains a letter proving Rourke was Meadows's commanding officer in Saigon.

Bosch tracks down Franklin deep in the tunnel and kills him after Franklin's gunshot wound slows his escape.

Bosch escapes the hospital and finds a backup recording in which Wish asked Sharkey whether he recognized her.

Bosch watches Meadows's funeral from a distance and secretly leaks key details about the case to reporter Bremmer.

Before Bosch can link the murder to a larger conspiracy, methodical detective work uncovers critical physical evidence: a tortured body, a pawn ticket for a stolen bracelet, and a computer trail leading to an FBI-controlled bank robbery case. While Bosch pursues leads, Director Irving quietly deploys Lewis and Clarke to surveil and eventually destroy Bosch's career, adding an institutional threat running parallel to the criminal investigation. Bosch and Wish's working relationship deepens through a series of tense encounters, including finding a witness in Sharkey and sharing a vulnerable conversation at Bosch's home about the costs of the Vietnam War. The investigation expands dramatically when a State Department contact reveals that corrupt former Saigon police captains smuggled millions in diamonds into the United States, and a physical attack on Bosch and Wish confirms the stakes have turned lethal. The secondary threads converge in the final act as a military file exposes Rourke's connection to Meadows, Bosch kills Franklin in the tunnels, and a damning backup recording ultimately points Bosch toward Wish's hidden role in the case.

The supporting scenes that build the case and deepen the conspiracy.

Bosch notices unfinished graffiti on the dam wall and deduces that the artist may have witnessed the body being dumped.

Meadows's landlady tells Bosch that Meadows once arrived home covered in dirt, dropped off by a beige jeep.

Bosch contacts reporter Bremmer and learns the WestLand bank robbery was carried out through a hand-dug tunnel under the vault.

Bosch corners Wish at a restaurant after learning the FBI pulled both his and Meadows's personal files from the VA.

Bosch and Wish sleep together after an evening spent reviewing case evidence at her apartment.

Rourke arrives unexpectedly after news of Sharkey's murder, and Bosch grows suspicious that Rourke knows more about the killing than he admits.

Bosch tears apart his home phone and discovers a listening device planted inside it.

Bosch ambushes Internal Affairs officers Lewis and Clarke in their surveillance car, handcuffs them to a tree, and interrogates them.

Bosch and Wish deduce that the robbers are planning a second diamond heist at a Beverly Hills vault over the holiday weekend.

During the vault stakeout, Bosch calls Rourke and directly accuses him of having served alongside Meadows as military police in Saigon.

Delgado shoots Bosch in the shoulder inside the tunnel, and Bosch loses his goggles, flashlight, and gun in the darkness.

Irving interrogates Bosch in the hospital and reveals that Lewis and Clarke were not the ones who bugged his phone.

Bosch reads every name on the replica Vietnam War Memorial at the veterans cemetery and cannot find the name of Wish's brother.

Wish reveals her brother was actually murdered in Los Angeles after the war, killed for trying to steal the heroin he was couriering.

Bosch gives Wish two days to turn herself in and reveals that the Dollmaker shooting was not an intentional execution.

From the very first moments at the crime scene, small observations — unfinished graffiti, a dirt-covered veteran dropped off by a jeep, a tip about a tunnel robbery — set Bosch on a path that no other detective would have followed. His willingness to break rules and push past institutional resistance drives him to confront the FBI, discover surveillance on his own home, and physically overpower his Internal Affairs pursuers to trace the flow of leaked information. The investigation reaches a personal turning point when Bosch and Wish sleep together, even as Bosch grows suspicious of her shifting behavior after Sharkey's death, and a key deduction at a veterans cemetery replica reveals the robbers' timetable. In the tunnel, Delgado's bullet strips Bosch of every weapon, leaving him helpless for Rourke's villain monologue, and afterward a hospital confrontation with Irving opens the final mystery by eliminating Lewis and Clarke as suspects. The truth unravels entirely at the Vietnam War Memorial replica, where the absence of Wish's brother's name unlocks her confession — and Bosch responds not with vigilante sympathy but with an ultimatum, revealing his own moral line in the process.
