Meanwhile in Adua, the corrupt Inquisitor Glokta is weaponized by Arch Lector Sult against the powerful Mercers Guild, while the vain young officer Jezal dan Luthar trains for the annual Contest with his eye on glory. War looms as the Northern king Bethod makes aggressive demands of the Union and is rebuffed by both its government and by Bayaz himself. Bayaz assembles an unlikely company that includes Logen and the escaped former slave Ferro Maljinn, guiding them through deadly encounters with magical creatures called Eaters and political enemies alike. The novel ends with Glokta dispatched to a besieged southern city while Bayaz's company sails toward a mysterious destination at the edge of the world.

While the main plot unfolds through grand confrontations and magical displays, a second layer of significant events shapes each character's trajectory. Logen's survival and his encounter with guiding spirits set him on the path toward Bayaz, while his comrades in the North regroup and appoint new leadership after presuming him dead. Glokta methodically builds the case against the Mercers through arrests and coerced confessions, even as Jezal's personal struggles with training, love, and pride quietly transform him. The clanmates' discovery of murdered farmers and their violent retribution reveals the human cost of Bethod's conquest far from any throne room. By the novel's end, private confrontations between West and Ardee, and between Jezal and Ardee, close the emotional arc that runs beneath the political and magical spectacle.

Sult's manipulation of Glokta is far more elaborate than it first appears, and the discovery that the Arch Lector engineered the Mercers' downfall from the very beginning exposes the true depth of the Inquisition's corruption. Glokta's investigation into Bayaz uncovers an ancient scroll that lends the Magus credibility even as Sult seeks to discredit him before the entire court. Smaller but equally consequential turning points drive the personal arcs forward: Jezal's first real victory against West signals his growth, West's promotion commits him to a war he fears, and Ferro's decision to join Bayaz's quest pivots entirely on a promise of vengeance. The pool closes with acts of loyalty and reconciliation that quietly anchor the novel's emotional core before the company sets sail.
