The collection opens with its most famous story, as a young pianist marries a sinister Marquis only to discover his murderous secret and face execution — saved at the last moment by her own mother. Two retellings of Beauty and the Beast follow: one in which Beauty's love transforms a lonely beast into a man, and one in which a heroine traded away by her gambling father instead sheds her own humanity to become something wild. A cunning cat engineers the death of a noblewoman's cruel husband and wins his master a wealthy marriage, while a vampire countess in a ruined village is freed from her curse by an innocent soldier's act of compassion. The collection closes with tales from the wolf tradition: a girl discovers her grandmother is a werewolf, a different girl chooses to become a wolf's companion rather than his victim, and a feral young woman restores a monstrous duke through the simple force of her animal care.

Beneath the headline drama of the collection runs a current of quieter but essential moments: the gifts and rituals that reveal the Marquis's control, the small acts of connection that sustain the narrator, and the domestic aftermath of his death in which she builds something new. Beauty's time at the Beast's manor and her subsequent forgetting in London show how easily comfort curdles into complacency, while the heroine of The Tiger's Bride navigates her captivity through a mechanical double and a spy-mirror. A scheming cat pieces together the key information that sets his master's fortune in motion, and in the darkest corners of the collection a snow child is conjured and destroyed, a vampire countess endures her lonely ritual of predation, and a feral girl is handed from institution to monster with no one to advocate for her. The pool ends as villagers unwittingly give Wolf-Alice the opening she needs to save the only creature who has ever accepted her.

Beauty is jolted from her comfortable forgetting by the sudden reappearance of the Beast's dog, while the heroine of The Tiger's Bride refuses submission and instead engineers her own terms. A scheming cat engineers the perfect timing of a domestic crisis, and a woman in the forest realizes too late that the creature she loves intends to cage her just as he caged every woman before. A snow child falls on a rose that then turns on the woman who destroyed her, and a vampire is undone not by a weapon but by an unexpected gesture of tenderness. The pool closes in the wolf stories, where a girl chooses laughter over fear and a feral young woman gazes into a mirror for the first time, beginning the journey that will ultimately save the most monstrous creature she has ever known.
