Long before Collum arrived, Arthur's kingdom was built on miraculous foundations and tested by grueling quests, including a disastrous search for the Holy Grail that cost many knights their lives. The stories of the supporting cast — Palomides, Dagonet, Constantine, and Scipio — reveal how Camelot drew unlikely people from across the world and pushed them to their limits. Each character carries personal wounds that complicate the idealistic vision of Arthur's court, from Palomides's unrequited love to Dagonet's hard-won wisdom at the edge of heaven. When the quest for the Holy Lance begins, these figures face new sacrifices, including Scipio's last stand against a fiend and Palomides's departure into the fairy world. The arrival of Lancelot brings a brief false hope before his violent seizure of power forces the survivors to scatter. Morgan's final vision of the incoming Saxons closes the story by revealing that the greatest change to Britain has nothing to do with any knight's sword.

Beneath the surface of the quest, a series of startling revelations steadily dismantles the heroic myths on which the characters have built their lives. Arthur's secret shame about his own origins, Lancelot's manufactured innocence, and the truth behind Merlin's legendary romance with his apprentice all expose how official stories conceal abuse and ambition. Characters are forced to confront not just external enemies but the lies that shaped their identities — none more so than Collum, who learns the truth about his own mysterious parentage too late to change what he has already done. The manner in which Excalibur is finally claimed — by destroying rather than drawing it from its stone — signals that the age of ordained miracles is over and that humans must now make their own choices. Arthur's final farewell confirms this, leaving his knights not with a plan but with the harder task of finding meaning without one. The novel closes not with a king but with a lone survivor who dies far from Camelot, having traveled beyond the reach of the legend itself.
