Commissioner Enderby tells Detective Lije Baley about the murder of Dr. Sarton in Spacetown and assigns him to solve the case.

Lije travels to Spacetown and discovers that his new partner, R. Daneel Olivaw, is a highly convincing humanoid robot.

R. Daneel Olivaw draws his blaster on an angry shoe store mob and threatens to shoot, dispersing the crowd.

Lije brings Daneel home to meet his family; Jessie and Bentley share dinner with Daneel, unaware he is a robot.

Jessie returns home early and confronts Daneel directly, discovering for herself that he is not human.

Lije and Jessie argue in whispers about the danger of keeping a robot partner in their home.

Lije announces to Dr. Fastolfe in Spacetown that he has solved the case, accusing Daneel of being Dr. Sarton in disguise.

Fastolfe and Daneel disprove Lije's theory by having Daneel expose the steel circuitry beneath his skin.

On the drive back to the City, Daneel tells Lije that Commissioner Enderby was their original primary suspect.

Daneel recognizes faces from the shoe store riot watching him and Lije eat in the communal kitchen.

Lije and Daneel find Francis Clousarr at the Yeast-town factory; Clousarr refuses to shake Daneel's hand or touch him.

Daneel reports that the police robot R. Sammy has been found destroyed inside the station.

Commissioner Enderby questions Lije about his access to the murder weapon, and Lije realizes he is being framed.

Lije draws his blaster on Commissioner Enderby and formally accuses him of murdering Dr. Sarton.

Enderby confesses to the murder, and Daneel convinces him to redirect the Medievalist movement toward space colonization instead of facing prison.

The story begins when Detective Elijah Baley is assigned by Commissioner Enderby to solve the politically explosive murder of Dr. Sarton, a Spacer scientist, and is paired with the humanoid robot R. Daneel Olivaw. Trouble at a shoe store and a tense family dinner quickly reveal the strain their unlikely partnership places on everyone around them. Lije's first major theory — that Daneel is actually Dr. Sarton in disguise — collapses under scrutiny in Spacetown, but the investigation presses on with Commissioner Enderby emerging as the only Earthman present at the crime scene. A network of Medievalist conspirators, the destruction of the police robot R. Sammy, and a framing attempt against Lije all converge as the case reaches its breaking point. Lije ultimately exposes Commissioner Enderby as the killer, tracing how he used R. Sammy to smuggle a blaster to Spacetown and shoot Sarton by mistake, believing him to be Daneel. The case resolves with Enderby's confession and a deal that redirects the Medievalist movement toward interplanetary colonization rather than punishment.

The core murder investigation from assignment to confession.

Commissioner Enderby tells Lije that his robot partner must live in Lije's apartment for the duration of the investigation.

Lije watches a woman on the Expressway drop her bag and fail to retrieve it as commuters kick it away.

Lije and Daneel push through the angry crowd into the barricaded shoe store to assess the situation.

Lije warns Daneel never to draw a blaster on humans again; Daneel calmly argues that his tactic was fully calculated.

Lije and Daneel undergo full decontamination at Spacetown, where Lije must surrender his blaster and give a blood sample.

Lije steps outside into Spacetown's open air for the first time and nearly faints from the wind and open sky.

Dr. Fastolfe explains that Spacers have no immunity to Earth diseases and would almost certainly die if they entered the City.

Lije arranges for himself and Daneel to relocate to a different section apartment to keep Jessie and Bentley safe.

Lije and Daneel sprint through the City's acceleration strips, hopping between lanes to shake their Medievalist pursuers.

Lije and Daneel take refuge in a power plant; Daneel reveals that gamma radiation would destroy his positronic brain.

Bentley shows up unexpectedly at Lije and Daneel's new section apartment late at night.

Daneel returns from reviewing police files and presents Lije with a list of Medievalist suspects, including Francis Clousarr.

Lije and Daneel interview Dr. Gerrigel, a robotics expert summoned from Washington, about the Three Laws of Robotics.

Daneel reveals that the Spacers cerebroanalyzed Commissioner Enderby and determined he was emotionally incapable of murder, removing him as a suspect.

As Lije and Daneel leave the Commissioner's office together, Daneel quietly quotes the Bible passage Lije had earlier shared with him.

This pool follows the secondary scenes that build the world of the City and trace the partnership between Lije and Daneel step by step. From the moment Lije is told he must house a robot in his family's apartment, through the cramped shoe store confrontation, the unsettling openness of Spacetown, and a frantic chase through the acceleration strips, these events reveal the texture of life in this overcrowded future world. The relationship between Lije and Daneel deepens across these moments as each learns the other's strengths and limitations — Lije warning Daneel about human social customs, Daneel hauling Lije to safety on the strips, and Daneel candidly revealing the vulnerability of his positronic brain. Supporting characters like Bentley, Dr. Gerrigel, and the cerebroanalysis that silently cleared Commissioner Enderby add layers to the investigation without resolving it. The pool closes with the same emotional note as the novel itself: Daneel quoting the Bible passage Lije had shared with him, a small gesture that signals how far the robot has come in understanding humanity.

The world of the City and the people surrounding Lije's investigation.

Commissioner Enderby reveals an unexpected and bitter personal hatred of robots during a planning discussion with Lije.

Daneel informs Lije that 502 unguarded exits exist from the City, meaning a human could have walked to Spacetown on foot.

Lije falls asleep convinced he has solved the case — certain that Dr. Sarton is still alive and disguised as Daneel.

Fastolfe reveals that Dr. Sarton's body was cremated, making it impossible for Lije to verify his theory that Daneel is Sarton.

After Lije collapses in shock at having his theory disproved, Dr. Fastolfe revives him with a syringe.

Dr. Fastolfe explains the C/Fe vision: Earthpeople working alongside humanoid robots to colonize and settle entirely new worlds.

Lije dreams that he pushes Jessie to her death in a fission chamber, and his dream-self knows he caused it.

During the Gerrigel interview, Lije accuses Daneel of murder, claiming Daneel concealed the blaster inside his stomach compartment.

Dr. Gerrigel confirms Daneel is First-Law compliant on-site; Daneel then reveals his blaster lacks an ignition bud and cannot fire.

Daneel suggests to Lije that Jessie may be a Medievalist, which would explain how she knew Daneel was a robot.

Jessie arrives at the police station and confesses her Medievalist activities; she identifies Clousarr by his distinctive yeast factory smell.

On the way back to the station, Clousarr strikes Daneel across the face; Daneel makes no move to stop him or retaliate.

Daneel tells Lije that Dr. Fastolfe has dropped the murder investigation and that the Spacers plan to abandon Earth.

Lije realizes the name Jezebel is the key clue — Clousarr could not have known that name, proving Enderby framed him.

Lije tells Daneel he trusts him and asks that Daneel someday help guide Bentley toward a life on a new world.

This pool captures the pivotal moments of discovery and emotional change that steer the investigation toward its solution. Clues accumulate slowly across the story — Enderby's surprising hatred of robots, the revelation of hundreds of unguarded exits from the City, Jessie's secret Medievalist ties, and a name that no innocent person should have known — each one a piece Lije must eventually assemble under pressure. His repeated false leads, including his conviction that Daneel is Sarton in disguise and his accusation that Daneel hid the murder weapon inside his own body, show the mental struggle of a pragmatic detective operating far outside his comfort zone. Turning points like Fastolfe planting the C/Fe vision in Lije's mind, Jessie's tearful station confession, and the identification of a broken eyeglass lens at the crime scene mark the moments when the truth finally surfaces. The pool closes on the personal transformation Lije has quietly undergone: a man who distrusted all robots ending the story by placing his son's future in Daneel's hands.
