The Chamber follows the KKK bombing of a civil rights lawyer's office in 1967 that kills two young children, and the decades-long legal battle that follows. Sam Cayhall is tried twice before all-white juries that deadlock, but a shifting social climate in Mississippi leads to his conviction by an integrated jury in 1981. Nearly a decade later, his grandson Adam Hall reveals his true identity to take on Sam's final appeal with execution only weeks away. Adam pursues every available legal avenue, including challenging the gas chamber as cruel and unusual punishment, while his mentor Goodman applies political pressure through a covert phone campaign. When all courts deny relief and the governor refuses clemency, Sam goes to the gas chamber after confessing to Adam the full truth about his role in the bombing. In the aftermath, Adam abandons corporate law to dedicate himself to death-penalty work in Mississippi.

Adam's family has been shattered by Sam's legacy — his father Eddie died by suicide, and aunt Lee battles alcoholism and a hollow marriage — all wounds that deepen as Adam pursues the case. The bureaucratic machinery of execution grinds forward under the fanatical Colonel Nugent, even as Adam fights on multiple legal fronts, survives an attempt to fire him from his firm, and confronts the victims' still-grieving family. Wedge resurfaces to silence Sam, cementing the injustice that only Sam will face legal consequences for the bombing. The novel ends with Lee revealing she burned the Cayhall family home to the ground, a desperate attempt to obliterate the past that has defined and destroyed so many lives.

The Chamber is driven by a series of pivotal discoveries and decisions that peel away the comfortable lies surrounding the Cayhall family and the legal case. From Sam's initial arrest through Dogan's betrayal, the narrative reveals how the justice system produces verdicts shaped by politics and shifting social climates rather than truth alone. Adam uncovers layer after layer of his grandfather's violent history — uncharged murders, lynchings, and a career defined by inherited hatred — while navigating a legal system that treats his client's life as a political asset. Sam's own turning points are equally critical: his refusal to pursue clemency, his decision to prepare apology letters for his victims' families, and his final confession to a chaplain reveal a man slowly confronting the full cost of his ideology. The public renunciation of the KKK on his last day marks Sam's most significant moral act, though it cannot stop the execution. Adam's announcement that he will remain in Mississippi signals his transformation from a young lawyer seeking answers into a man committed to confronting the same systemic failures that condemned his grandfather.
