Against his instincts, Reuven forgives Danny and the two become close friends, with Reuven soon meeting Danny's powerful and enigmatic Hasidic father, Reb Saunders. The end of World War II brings news of the Holocaust, which drives Reuven's father David Malter to become a passionate Zionist — a position that puts him in direct conflict with Reb Saunders and eventually forces the two boys apart. Reuven endures his father's illnesses and a painful separation from Danny as the political fight over Israel reshapes both families. Ultimately, Danny and Reuven confront Reb Saunders together, and his long-held silence is finally explained, setting Danny free to pursue his own path.

Behind the headline events of The Chosen lies a network of smaller but crucial moments that deepen the friendship between Reuven and Danny. Reuven's father is revealed to be Danny's secret library guide, and Reb Saunders enlists Reuven as a spy to track Danny's reading — positioning Reuven at the center of a web of hidden communication. The personal toll of war and politics accumulates through events like President Roosevelt's death, Reuven's father's second heart attack, and Reuven's lonely but triumphant performance in Talmud class. Danny's path to graduate school is shaped by small decisions, failed plans, and a key conversation with his friend's father. These secondary events show how friendship, parental influence, and the outside world quietly steer the two boys toward the story's resolution.

The scenes and discoveries that quietly drive the story forward.

The Chosen is built on a series of pivotal revelations that gradually reframe what the reader understands about each character. Early turning points — Danny's shocking confession about his boredom with the Talmud, Reuven's father's ethical doubt about guiding Danny's reading — establish that the story is about the tension between inherited duty and inner truth. As the Holocaust reshapes Jewish identity, the two fathers' opposing convictions about Israel force a painful rupture in the boys' friendship, which they sustain through silent, wordless loyalty. Danny's struggle with Freud, his failed plan to intercept his graduate school mail, and Levi's illness each push the story toward an inevitable confrontation. That confrontation finally arrives when Reb Saunders reveals the private grief behind his silence, asks for forgiveness, and releases his son — completing the transformation that began on a Brooklyn softball field.
