While Horner's scheme drives the main plot, the world around him is equally vivid, filled with boorish suitors, restless wives, and oblivious husbands. Sparkish introduces himself as an irritating social climber who mocks Horner, fails to court Alithea with any affection, and repeatedly creates the conditions for his own cuckolding. Pinchwife's jealous methods backfire at every turn, from his futile attempts to stop the Fidget women from taking Margery out to his failure to conceal his secret marriage from Horner. Harcourt's pursuit of Alithea runs parallel to Horner's escapades, with Sparkish unwittingly helping his rival at every step, including abandoning Alithea with Harcourt at the Exchange. The masquerade at Horner's house becomes a climactic gathering where the women drop their pretenses and complain openly about their neglected lives, bringing the affairs close to exposure. The Country Wife turns on a series of discoveries and decisions that repeatedly shift the balance of power between its characters. Lady Fidget's revelation that Horner is not impotent transforms her from an offended noblewoman into a willing co-conspirator, establishing the play's central moral logic that reputation matters more than virtue. Alithea's insistence on honoring her word to Sparkish becomes increasingly difficult to justify as Harcourt presses his suit and Sparkish reveals his contempt for genuine love. The Exchange scenes crystallize the central relationships — Margery recognizes Horner and falls for him in disguise, while Alithea bids Harcourt a painful farewell — before the arrival of forged letters and false parsons escalates the chaos of Act IV. Harcourt's parson ruse and Lucy's complicity show how wit and trickery outmaneuver aristocratic obliviousness, with Pinchwife's own suspicion ironically delivering Margery into Horner's arms. The final confrontation strips away all masks, but Lucy's intervention and the women's collective silence ultimately preserve the illusions that hold Restoration society together.
