Set in the fantasy kingdom of Naxos, where the royal Maheras family rules through hereditary shadow powers, the story follows Chrysantha Demos, a 19-year-old noblewoman who has spent seven years pretending to be a simpleton to manipulate the men who control her life. When a letter from her younger sister Alessandra announces Alessandra's engagement to Kallias Maheras, the king of Naxos known as the Shadow King, Chrysantha is consumed by jealous fury, having once failed to win Kallias herself. She smothers her elderly, lecherous husband, Hadrian Demos, the Duke of Pholios, with a pillow.

No one suspects foul play; the duke was already dying. As the dowager duchess, a legal status that places her under no man's authority, Chrysantha inherits the estate and fortune. She had engineered this marriage to a dying, heirless man precisely so his death would grant her something almost no woman in Naxos possesses: true freedom. She drops her act, befriends her staff, renovates the manor, and begins visiting Zanita's, a brothel catering to women. For the first time, she controls her own life.

Then Eryx Demos appears in her bedroom one night, armed and dangerous. The 18-year-old claims to be the duke's grandson and presents himself as the new Duke of Pholios. Chrysantha suspects he is a con artist working with the family solicitor, Mr. Vander, but birth certificates bearing royal seals confirm that the late duke had a daughter, Ophira Demos, who was disowned after becoming pregnant. Eryx is Ophira's son, his father unlisted. A will leaves everything to Eryx and grants Chrysantha only 50 necos, the local currency, per month.

Chrysantha refuses Eryx's offer to annul her marriage and leave, because an annulment would return her to her father's control and the marriage market. She retains the legal right to reside at the manor as dowager duchess, so she digs in. Eryx fires half the staff, halts renovations, and deducts her expenses from her stipend, leaving her penniless. He offers escalating sums if she will marry and leave. She refuses every time.

To fund a private investigator, Ilias Tomaras, Chrysantha brokers two deals with Eryx: etiquette lessons in exchange for cash and rehired servants, and a promise to endorse him before the king at Alessandra's wedding in exchange for her reinstated stipend. She funnels money to Tomaras through Kyros, a footman and her closest friend.

During their contentious cohabitation, Chrysantha notices unsettling details. Eryx's eyes shift from brown to glowing amber when he is angry or aroused. His two supposed valets, Argus and Dyson, are actually bodyguards from his army regiment. When she falls asleep in the library, she enters a shared dream where Eryx has black-purple horns, pointed ears, and elongated canines. Meanwhile, Tomaras confirms Eryx is genuinely the duke's grandson and that Ophira died roughly 18 months earlier, apparently from grief.

Chrysantha brews a poison and slips it into Eryx's dinner. Instead of dying, he convulses as black shadows pour from his mouth, identical to the Shadow King's powers. Eavesdropping afterward, she hears Argus suggest killing her; Eryx refuses. Chrysantha concludes Eryx is not human and decides to seduce him to uncover his weaknesses.

At Alessandra's wedding and coronation, Chrysantha provokes Eryx in the carriage until his horns sprout. At the ball, she reveals her true self to Alessandra and the king, apologizing for years of cruelty and endorsing Eryx as the legitimate duke. When Lord Barlas, an earl, forces Chrysantha into painful dances, Eryx breaks the man's wrist. Eryx disappears during the event and returns with blood on his sleeve; his bodyguards do not return at all.

Back at the estate, Chrysantha discovers Eryx's sleeping quarters in the cellar, where a hit list is pinned to the wall. Most names are crossed out, corresponding to missing noblemen. General Kaiser, the officer Eryx spoke with at the wedding, has been freshly struck through. Barlas has been newly added. At the bottom sits Kallias Maheras. Eryx admits the killings were premeditated vengeance against leaders who caused needless military deaths. Chrysantha proposes "monster training" sessions to help him control his shifting.

One night, Sarkis, a former soldier from Eryx's regiment who accidentally absorbed some of Eryx's shadow abilities, leads armed men into the manor. They slash Chrysantha's arm to lure Eryx. He arrives in full monstrous form and kills the intruders. Chrysantha kicks a sword to him and shouts a warning when Sarkis attacks from behind; Eryx decapitates him, revealing that beheading is the only way to kill someone with shadow abilities. Afterward, Eryx stitches her wound and kisses her. She reciprocates but lies, claiming she was on laudanum.

Their relationship deepens. During a later encounter, Eryx reveals he knows the laudanum was a lie and confesses he has never kissed anyone because intimacy triggers his shift. Chrysantha insists on full honesty before going further. On a rowboat the next day, Eryx tells her everything: His mother attracted a demon who promised vengeance against the late Shadow King if she bore his child. Eryx was conceived as a half-demon weapon. When the late king's son led a palace rebellion and killed his father before Ophira could act, she lost her purpose and wasted away. Eryx redirected his mission toward killing military leaders responsible for his comrades' deaths. Chrysantha asks him to abandon his plan to kill Kallias, and he agrees immediately.

They kiss by the lake, and Eryx fully shifts. Kyros stumbles upon them and sees Eryx's monstrous form; Chrysantha convinces him to stay silent. Then Tomaras returns with final evidence: Eryx paid Vander with a valuable painting from the estate's own collection to forge a new will. Everything rightfully belongs to Chrysantha.

Furious at what she sees as manipulation, Chrysantha takes the evidence to the palace and reveals Eryx's fraud and demon heritage to Kallias, who departs to confront Eryx. Only then does she read a letter Eryx gave her before she left: He confesses to forging the will, declares his love, and reveals he has already instructed Vander to transfer the entire dukedom to her. He asks only to stay in whatever capacity she allows.

Chrysantha races back with Alessandra. On the journey, she confesses to killing the duke; Alessandra responds by sharing her own violent past. At the estate, Chrysantha finds Eryx and Kallias locked in battle. She throws herself between them. Eryx halts his blade a hair's breadth from her. She kisses him, transforming his aggression into desire, and he carries her to the bedroom.

Afterward, Chrysantha confesses everything to Eryx: killing his grandfather and poisoning his food. He confesses his own crimes, and they reconcile as equals. Alessandra, now queen, pardons them both, while Kallias warns that Chrysantha will be held responsible if Eryx ever loses control. With the dukedom legally transferring to her name, Chrysantha possesses both the freedom she fought for and the love she never expected to want.
