Luke encounters an old man in the advanced, mindless stages of the 'Gets pandemic on a jungle road in Guam.

Captain Leo Bathgate shares the story of his wife's slow death from the 'Gets during the voyage to the Hesperus.

Dr. Felz introduces Luke to ambrosia, a mysterious gelatinous substance from the ocean depths believed to have miraculous healing properties.

Al leads Luke into the station morgue to view Dr. Westlake's body, which is covered in grotesque, overlapping scar tissue.

Al plays a garbled audio recording in which Clayton's voice asks for Luke to come home to the deep-sea station.

Luke and Al seal themselves inside the Challenger 5 submersible and begin their eight-mile descent into the Mariana Trench.

A swarm of viperfish attacks the Challenger 5, hammering the porthole and tearing at the foam pressure seal.

Luke enters the Trieste's freezing, dark docking tunnel and hears an unseen child's laughter echoing from somewhere inside the station.

Clayton appears at a porthole, lets Luke and Al into the main station, and denies ever sending a message calling for Luke.

Luke listens to Westlake's audio recordings, which document the appearance and steady growth of a mysterious hole in his lab wall.

Clayton reanimates a frozen guinea pig using ambrosia, and the creature becomes savagely aggressive and impossible to kill or keep dead.

Luke injects Clayton with a powerful tranquilizer and discovers his arm has undergone a grotesque, unnatural transformation beneath heavy bandaging.

Clayton's grotesquely elongated hand tears itself free from his wrist and skitters away independently into the station's darkness.

Luke enters Westlake's sealed lab and finds Al's dissected but still-conscious body woven into a vast, living beehive structure.

The ancient Fig Men reveal they abducted Zachary years earlier as leverage and offer to return him if Luke agrees to carry them to the surface.

Luke Nelson, a veterinarian, is recruited to descend eight miles into the Mariana Trench to reach the silent Trieste station, where his brother Clayton has stopped communicating. After Dr. Felz reveals ambrosia as a potential cure for a global pandemic and Al shows Luke what happened to the researcher who already surfaced dead and horribly mutilated, Luke and Al begin their harrowing descent into the abyss. Inside the alien station, Luke uncovers audio recordings documenting the growing holes in the walls and watches Clayton demonstrate ambrosia's power through a grotesque reanimation experiment. Clayton's own body begins transforming under ambrosia's influence, culminating in his severed hand acting independently and the revelation of a living beehive containing Al's dissected but conscious body. The story ends when the ancient Fig Men emerge and reveal that Luke's missing son was taken years ago as leverage to bring Luke to this exact moment.

The headline events of Luke's descent into the deep.

Luke spots a young girl with early symptoms of the 'Gets on her elbows while passing through a quiet seaside village.

Dr. Felz reveals that Dr. Eva Parks, the researcher who first discovered ambrosia, died by suicide shortly after making the discovery.

Al introduces herself as Luke's submarine pilot and reveals that Dr. Westlake has already surfaced from the Trieste dead and mutilated.

A giant squid attaches itself to the Challenger 5's porthole and pecks at the glass with its beak during the descent.

Al describes the Trieste's construction and recounts how technician Otto Railsback, who built the habitat alone, was later found dead inside it.

As the Challenger approaches the seafloor, Luke's first sight of the Trieste drives a visceral, instinctive revulsion through him.

Al identifies the station's dog as Little Bee, or Pchyolka, named after one of the Soviet dogs sent into space.

Dr. Hugo Toy appears at a porthole, locks eyes with Luke and Al, and draws a scalpel slowly across his own throat without breaking the skin.

Luke finds a black notebook labeled 'Psych Report' in a station corridor and pockets it before the lights cut out.

Luke dreams he is feeding ambrosia to his infant son Zachary, whose face distorts monstrously as dozens of eyes bloom inside his mouth.

Luke sleepwalks through the tunnels following a vision of Zachary to a dead end where 'DADDY COME HOME' gleams in blood on the wall.

Luke and Al discover the Challenger has lost all power and a deadly current ring has returned above them, blocking their escape.

The station's emergency backup lighting fails completely, plunging the entire Trieste into absolute darkness.

Luke holds Little Bee as she dies after her flesh begins fusing irreversibly with the station's grotesquely mutated second dog.

A composite being containing the merged essences of Luke and Zachary climbs out of the surfaced Challenger onto the burning Hesperus.

Before Luke descends, the surface world establishes the human cost of the 'Gets pandemic and the desperate hope pinned to ambrosia, shadowed by the revelation that its discoverer died by suicide. The descent through the ocean reveals a hostile environment delivering escalating physical attacks, while Al hints at the station's grim history and Luke first glimpses the Trieste with instinctive dread. Inside the station, smaller but significant moments accumulate: a dog named after a Soviet space mission, a researcher's chilling silent threat, and a discovered notebook hinting at vast malevolence. Nightmares and sleepwalking episodes accelerate Luke's psychological collapse as the station weaponizes his grief over his missing son. The trap closes as power and communications fail completely before the novel ends with an inhuman composite being emerging from the ocean onto the burning Hesperus.

The secondary moments that shape Luke's journey into the abyss.

Dr. Felz shows Luke a video of ambrosia instantly eliminating all cancers in a test mouse, revealing the mission's extraordinary potential.

Luke discovers a bloody message reading 'THE AG MEY ARE HERE' smeared on the wall inside Dr. Westlake's returned submersible.

Luke recalls telling his young son Zachary that bedroom monsters called 'Fig Men' were trapped and sealed inside an obsidian stone.

Al explains that prolonged time at extreme depth can cause a psychosis the crews call the 'sea sillies,' blurring reality.

Luke recalls the day Zachary vanished without a trace during a game of hide-and-seek in a park, an event that destroyed his marriage.

Luke and Al find the station's communications room with nine monitors shattered and all radio wires deliberately ripped out.

Dr. Toy demands Luke cut his own hand to prove he is real, then declares the Trieste is a Skinner Box run by a hostile intelligence.

The station ceiling descends in controlled increments onto Dr. Toy, crushing him as he laughs in the voice of Luke's infant son.

Luke and Al discover they have conflicting memories and have both been unknowingly losing time inside a shared waking dreamstate.

Clayton tears an Einstein poster from his lab wall to reveal a shimmering, active hole that has been secretly growing behind it.

Clayton's severed hand crawls to Westlake's sealed lab keypad and punches in a code, unlocking the hatch from the outside.

Luke finds the unconscious Clayton connected to a new hole in the station wall by a pulsating, umbilical-like cord of ambrosia.

Clayton confesses he never cared about curing the 'Gets, then is retracted entirely through the hole and consumed by what lies beyond it.

The apparent Al inside the Challenger decays into black fluid that fills the submersible and speaks to Luke in Zachary's voice.

Luke accepts the Fig Men's offer, and a monstrous creature bearing Zachary's form pushes tendrils into Luke's skull and merges with him.

Early revelations about ambrosia and a blood-smeared warning in a returned submersible establish the substance as both miracle and threat, while a childhood story about 'Fig Men' and the traumatic flashback to Zachary's disappearance reveal the personal stakes the station's intelligence will exploit. Inside the Trieste, escalating turning points dismantle any hope of a rational outcome: a researcher's dying theory frames them all as laboratory subjects, and the discovery of a hidden hole in Clayton's own lab confirms his corruption. The destruction of all communications, the controlled crushing of Dr. Toy, and Clayton's final confession and absorption through the hole strip away every possibility of escape. The pool ends with the defining sequence of revelations: a false Al dissolving into darkness, Luke facing the ancient architects of his suffering, and his ultimate surrender to the Fig Men's deal as the monstrous version of his son merges with and consumes him.
