Marian McAlpin begins the novel as a woman who values her independence while working at a survey company and casually dating a lawyer named Peter. After a panicked night out, Peter proposes to her and she unexpectedly accepts, setting off a growing crisis of identity and bodily autonomy. Her engagement transforms her relationship with food, her sense of self, and her emotional dependence on a detached graduate student named Duncan. As her wedding date approaches, Marian's dissociation peaks and she escapes Peter's party to sleep with Duncan, only to find that he cannot restore what she has lost. Returning home, she bakes a woman-shaped cake and offers it to Peter, who flees in alarm and ends the engagement without a word. These events trace the everyday texture of Marian's life before and during her engagement, from her anxieties at Seymour Surveys to the social web she navigates around Ainsley, Len, Clara, and Duncan. Her instinctive dread of permanence surfaces at work when she is asked to sign the company pension plan, and it deepens through visits to her overwhelmed, pregnant friend Clara. Ainsley's scheme to seduce Len runs parallel to Marian's own romantic avoidances, and the two women's lives grow increasingly entangled as Ainsley's pregnancy reshapes their household. Marian's growing estrangement from food — first carrots, then meat secretly passed to Duncan at dinner — is captured in quieter domestic scenes that show the body rebelling before the mind understands why. The secondary characters Fish, Trevor, and the office virgins provide a backdrop of conventional identity against which Marian's resistance stands out. The pool ends with Ainsley's unexpected new commitment to Fish, a resolution born of the same institutional psychology she always relied on.

This pool focuses on the specific moments where knowledge, confrontations, and sudden realizations change the direction of Marian's story. Several early revelations establish the novel's central tensions: pregnancy costs women their jobs, Peter's feelings about marriage are more fragile than he admits, and Marian's own body communicates her fears through dissolving dreams and a suddenly inedible steak. The crux of the story's middle section is Marian's growing awareness that her inner self is disappearing — marked by an engagement ring hidden among loose coins, a stranger's face in the mirror, and a silent moment with Peter that she lets pass rather than act on. Social confrontations at Peter's party — Joe's damning assessment of educated women, Duncan's refusal to enter, Ainsley's public announcement — force Marian's crisis to its breaking point. These turning points collectively show that Marian's predicament is not merely personal but structural, shaped by every institution around her. Together they form the spine of decisions and discoveries that make Marian's final act of baking and consuming the woman-shaped cake feel both inevitable and defiant.
