Marion Garaï asks Lawrence to adopt a troubled herd of wild elephants that will be killed if no reserve takes them in.

Lawrence agrees to take the herd and races to build a boma and electrify Thula Thula's fencing before the elephants arrive.

The elephant herd arrives at Thula Thula during a rainstorm and is ushered into the boma, where the new matriarch is named Nana.

The herd breaks out of the boma on their first night by working together to topple a massive tambotie tree onto the fence.

The escaped herd breaks into the Umfolozi game reserve, where Frankie charges the conservation manager and nearly kills him.

KZN Wildlife gives Lawrence a final ultimatum: if the herd escapes again, every elephant will be shot on sight.

Lawrence decides to live outside the boma with the elephants to rehabilitate them by getting them to trust at least one human.

Lawrence stands at the boma fence and pleads with Nana not to break out; she backs away and disappears into the dark.

Nana approaches Lawrence at the boma fence and reaches through to touch his face and body with her trunk.

Lawrence releases the elephant herd from the boma into the reserve, convinced that Nana now trusts him enough.

Ngwenya tells Lawrence that Ndonga, head of the Ovambo guards, is behind the large-scale poaching operation on the reserve.

Lawrence gets the truth from Phineas, who confesses that over 100 animals have been slaughtered and sold in the poaching scheme.

The Ovambo guards flee before police can arrest them, and the reserve begins to find peace and equilibrium.

Nana and Frankie each bring their newborn calves into the wild to introduce them directly to Lawrence.

Lawrence returns from a six-month stint saving animals in war-torn Baghdad to find the herd doubled in size and waiting at the gate.

Lawrence Anthony agrees to adopt a troubled herd of elephants destined for death and races to prepare his reserve, Thula Thula, for their arrival. The herd breaks out on their very first night, and KZN Wildlife warns that another escape means every elephant will be shot. Lawrence responds by living outside the boma to earn the herd's trust, forging a bond with the matriarch, Nana, that ultimately convinces him to release the elephants onto the reserve. Shortly after, Lawrence uncovers and dismantles a large-scale poaching operation run by his own head guard, Ndonga, bringing peace to the reserve at last. As the years pass, the herd thrives and grows, with Nana and Frankie each introducing their newborns to Lawrence in the wild. The book closes with Lawrence returning from a dangerous mission to save animals in war-torn Baghdad to find his herd doubled in number and waiting at the gate to greet him.

Three southern white rhinos are delivered to Thula Thula and introduced to the reserve.

Baby Thula is taken in and nursed by reserve staff for weeks but deteriorates and dies, leaving everyone at Thula Thula devastated.

Françoise's family coordinates with Lawrence's to stage a surprise wedding at the lodge, ambushing Lawrence into finally marrying Françoise.

While Lawrence works to rehabilitate the elephant herd, life at Thula Thula presents a constant series of obstacles, dangers, and surprising moments. Early challenges include a professional poacher sabotaging the fence construction and a wildlife dealer persistently trying to purchase the herd, while inside the boma a ranger barely escapes being killed by Frankie. As the reserve grows, rhinos are introduced and a luxury lodge is built to solve financial pressures, but nature keeps testing the team through an arson fire, a devastating flood, and relentless encounters with dangerous wildlife. Extraordinary moments of animal intelligence emerge, from Nana unlatching a boma gate to free trapped nyala to the herd sheltering alongside crocodiles and men during a wildfire. Heartbreak arrives when a newborn calf named Thula, born with deformed legs, is nursed with devotion by the entire reserve community but ultimately dies. Amid grief and hardship, a moment of pure joy breaks through when Françoise's family conspires with Lawrence's to surprise him with a wedding at the lodge.

Lawrence finds a white rhino slaughtered by poachers on the reserve and leads his rangers in a shootout that injures three of the attackers.

Nana breaks ET's charge to protect Lawrence, the first known instance of a wild elephant stopping another's charge to save a human.

Mnumzane flips Lawrence's Land Rover with guests inside; the entire herd arrives and jostles Mnumzane away so rescuers can reach Lawrence.

Lawrence discovers Mnumzane's tusk was cracked and severely infected, realizing chronic pain had been driving the elephant's dangerous behavior all along.

Nkosi Biyela visits the reserve and promises to join all the land under his control with Lawrence's for the Royal Zulu conservation project.

From the very beginning, Lawrence encounters revelations that change the course of events at Thula Thula, starting with the discovery that the original matriarch was shot during capture and that someone fired shots at the herd on their very first night in the boma. Small but telling clues — a suspicious gesture from an Ovambo guard, an uncut acacia tree left near the fence — gradually expose a conspiracy from within the reserve. As Lawrence deepens his bond with the elephants, extraordinary moments unfold: Frankie pulls out of a lethal charge when she recognizes Lawrence, and Nana breaks another elephant's charge entirely to protect a human life. Tragedy strikes when Mnumzane grows violent and must be put down, with Lawrence only afterward discovering that a painfully infected tusk had been driving the dangerous behavior all along. The pool ends on a note of hard-won hope, as Nkosi Biyela finally commits his land to Lawrence's Royal Zulu conservation project after twelve years of effort.

The discoveries, decisions, and pivotal moments that reshape Lawrence's understanding of his herd and his mission.
