As a puppy, Johannes chooses to run into the woods rather than be adopted as a pet by human visitors.

The three bison—Freya, Meredith, and Samuel—ask Johannes to be their Eyes and keep watch over the park.

Johannes investigates the plaza and discovers beautiful paintings on display, becoming deeply captivated by one depicting a child's face in a hurricane.

Twisty, a Trouble Traveler, sneaks a leash around Johannes's neck while the dog is mesmerized by his favorite painting.

Bertrand and Yolanda land on the thieves' van while Sonja attacks the men inside, freeing Johannes from captivity.

Johannes races through the entire park all night, fighting the phantom sensation of the leash to reclaim his freedom.

Inspired by his own liberation, Johannes resolves to free the bison from their enclosure and begins devising a plan.

Johannes rescues a toddler who falls into a pond near the art museum and barks until humans notice them.

The Assistant Eyes present Johannes with a pink dog sweater and rhinestone collar as a disguise to protect his freedom.

Johannes and his friends discover hundreds of goats have been brought to the park to eat weeds near the windmill.

The bison explain to Johannes that the park is on an island and that there is no way to leave.

Helene proposes hiding the bison among the goats when the herd boards the ship back to the mainland.

Sonja unlatches the bison's pen gate while raccoons create a diversion, and the bison walk out of their enclosure for the first time.

The bison see the ocean for the first time but decline to board the ship, choosing to die in their only home.

Johannes, Bertrand, and Helene board the ship together and sail away from the island toward the mainland.

Johannes is a wild dog who chose freedom over captivity as a puppy and grows up to serve as the Eyes of the park under the wisdom of three ancient bison. His fascination with paintings leads to his first-ever capture by a thief named Twisty, an experience that shakes his confidence but ignites a fierce new purpose in him. Determined to liberate the bison as he was liberated, Johannes recruits allies across the park while also saving a toddler from drowning and evading Animal Control. The arrival of a goat herd from the mainland opens an unexpected path, and Johannes rallies virtually every creature in the park to execute the Bison Freedom Gambit. When the bison choose to remain on the island after seeing the ocean for the first time, Johannes realizes his own yearning for freedom and boards the ship to the mainland alongside his closest friends.

The essential journey from free dog to mainland voyager.

Johannes's mother gives birth to him and his siblings in a hollow tree, then leaves to return to her human family.

Angus reports that people in the plaza are slowly walking around and studying strange rectangles he describes as full of nonsense.

A young boy surprises Johannes by petting him in the plaza, leaving the usually untouchable dog confused and deeply shaken.

Freya warns Johannes that the paintings may be dangerous dark magic, comparing their pull to the headlights that entrance the park's deer.

Twisty kicks Johannes into the thieves' van while his partner Rainbow threatens to kill the dog if he makes a sound.

After Johannes escapes, the bison express only relief at his safe return and Freya offers him shelter in their pen.

Bertrand informs Johannes that the new building under construction in the plaza is an art museum filled with paintings.

Photographs of Johannes rescuing the toddler spread widely, and Animal Control begins actively searching the park for the heroic dog.

Johannes wears his disguise to the art museum's grand opening but is nearly caught by two Animal Control officers with leashes.

Johannes returns to his lair to find Parks People have filled the entrance with cement, destroying his home entirely.

Two goats mock and bully Helene for her irregular horns; Johannes uses his authority over the herd to forbid all such cruelty.

Johannes and the Assistant Eyes recruit raccoons, pelicans, gulls, rats, crows, and horses to help execute the Bison Freedom Gambit.

Raccoons attack a university vehicle to trigger its alarm while rats chew through wires to cut the lights around the bison pen.

Johannes guides three large horses into the empty bison pen to serve as stand-ins and delay humans from realizing the bison are gone.

Sonja weeps and waves goodbye as the ship pulls away from the island; Johannes realizes she will become the new Eyes.

From the day Johannes's mother left him in a hollow tree, the park became his entire world, and his network of loyal friends became his family. Before the drama of his capture, small observations—Angus noticing strange rectangles, a boy's unexpected touch—began to draw Johannes toward the dangerous beauty of human art. After escaping the thieves, Johannes must navigate the unintended consequences of heroism when his rescue of a drowning toddler makes him famous and forces him into hiding. His friends rally around him with a disguise, but the park itself turns hostile when Parks People cement over his lair and Animal Control closes in. Through the planning and execution of the Bison Freedom Gambit, each animal contributes a unique skill to the impossible mission, and the story closes with Sonja tearfully waving goodbye as she steps into her new role as the park's Eyes.

The supporting moments that shaped Johannes's world and tested his friends.

Johannes describes his daily duty as the Eyes: racing through the park and reporting everything new or troubling to the bison each evening.

Johannes finds Bertrand flying recklessly between archers and their targets on the archery field and pleads with his friend to stop.

Bertrand and the other Assistant Eyes vow to sneak Johannes into the art museum to restore his shaken confidence after captivity.

Johannes watches workers deliver an enormous painting to the museum but forces himself to look away before its beauty can entrance him.

The news that the park is a tiny island far from the mainland devastates Johannes and makes him feel insignificant.

Coyote warning signs appear across the park, and Johannes feels startled and unsettled by how closely the description matches him.

Johannes meets Helene, a cheerful goat shunned by her herd because of the irregular cross-lines on her horns.

Over twelve days, Johannes and Helene exchange stories each evening, and he begins sleeping beside her while Bertrand grows distant.

With Helene's help, Johannes musters the entire goat herd with a mighty howl and explains their role in the escape plan.

The bison reveal that Johannes's father was the last coyote on the island, meaning Johannes himself is half-coyote.

Johannes finds Bertrand lying wounded on the archery field; Sonja and Angus help extract an arrow from the gull's wing.

Bertrand confesses he was jealous of Helene and injured himself performing a dangerous stunt to win Johannes's attention back.

Johannes embraces his coyote blood to run faster than ever and calls out to Bertrand, who is plummeting toward the sea.

Bertrand halts his fatal descent, chooses to live, and allows Johannes to carry him on his back toward the waiting ship.

Johannes's identity as the Eyes gives his life purpose, but a series of shattering revelations forces him to question everything he thought he knew about himself and his world. His growing friendship with Helene and the news that the park is on a tiny island expose how narrow his life has been, while coyote warning signs in the park hint at a truth the bison have kept hidden. When the bison finally reveal that Johannes's father was the last coyote on the island, his sense of self is upended, and he must learn to embrace what he is rather than what others think of him. Bertrand's injury and suicidal despair give Johannes the most urgent test of his character, requiring him to race with his full coyote speed and convince his best friend that life still holds meaning. By saving Bertrand and choosing to board the ship, Johannes stops fighting for others' freedom and claims his own.
