The story begins with the group arriving on Lana's private Greek island, where simmering tensions between Jason, Kate, and Lana are about to boil over. Lana discovers the earring that confirms Kate and Jason's affair, then turns to Elliot, who proposes using the island as the setting for a confrontation. On the island, Lana forces a reckoning with Jason, visits Nikos for mysterious help, and is apparently shot dead at the ancient ruin — leaving the group stranded with a murderer among them. The revelation that Lana faked her death reshapes everything, but Elliot's own schemes continue to spiral dangerously out of his control. Meanwhile, Lana has been awake to Elliot's manipulation all along, and she and Kate have been executing their own counter-plan against him. When Elliot's rage finally overtakes him, he retrieves a hidden shotgun and commits the real murder that ends Lana's life for good.

After dinner, the group gathers around the firepit and takes turns whispering questions into Agathi's fortune-telling crystal.

Enraged by Jason's pigeon hunting, Leo secretly gathers all of Jason's guns and hides them in a chest.

Despite Agathi's warnings about a worsening storm, the group boards a water taxi for dinner on Mykonos.

Elliot admits from prison that after Barbara West died, he found her completed manuscript and published it under his own name.

Before the violence begins, the novel carefully establishes the characters through the rhythms of daily island life — the crystal by the firepit, stolen guns, and a tense dinner on Mykonos where fault lines crack open publicly. Beneath the surface, secrets accumulate: Nikos's watchful desire for Lana, Jason's financial pressure, and Kate's barely contained guilt and addiction. The fury winds begin to rise just as Lana's quiet resolve hardens into action, and the audience of the island unwittingly becomes participants in a staged drama. Lana and Kate's counter-plan is executed with remarkable precision, as the group enlists everyone but Jason and engineers a final scene that turns Elliot's own methods against him. After Elliot wakes from the blank shot and finds himself abandoned on the beach, the story appears to end with his humiliation rather than his triumph. The epilogue then delivers the novel's final revelation: Elliot is not even a real writer, having stolen the manuscript that launched his career from Barbara West after her death.

Elliot confesses his love to Lana and proposes marriage; she laughs at him and cruelly dismisses any possibility between them.

Lana confronts Elliot on the beach with his notebook and walks away; the entire group follows, leaving him utterly alone.

The novel's deepest layer traces Elliot's origins — from a neglected, bullied child who escaped into the movies, to the calculating man who reinvented himself and engineered an entire friendship around his obsession with Lana. Key revelations accumulate in reverse: what Elliot claimed was spontaneous turns out to have been meticulously staged, and his version of events is repeatedly shown to be filtered through self-serving distortion. The night Elliot planned to propose marks the hinge point, as Lana meets Jason and Barbara West simultaneously strips away Elliot's fabricated identity. From that loss, Elliot shifts from longing to scheming — planting evidence, surveilling the affair, and quietly building toward a plan to remove Jason and claim Lana for himself. But his most damaging blind spot is Lana herself: her discovery of his notebook forces her into action, and when she confronts him on the beach with the full group behind her, it becomes clear she was always the true author of the story. Elliot's rejection on that beach is what finally unleashes the rage he has suppressed since childhood.

Hidden pasts, buried obsessions, and the decisions that set the tragedy in motion.
